Yeah man, you will have to come by and check it out or get out on the water with us when we get it done. It has been a fun project, I would love to see what your plans are for yours. What model is it?Awesome post Cameron. I saw that water a time or two during my 4 years at USC. I am actually headed your way this weekend to watch my younger brother graduate. Keep us posted as to what is happening over there. That area is a serious striper fishery!

What kind of boat is that? It looks a lot like a Gheenoe, but the nose looks a little different. I haven’t seen one of those before. I like it.On another note, the marine plywood came in today. I got the front and rear decks rebuilt, but the glass work will have to wait until the morning. I will post some pics. of the progress tomorow. We are going to have to move the project indoors since the rain seems to have set in for the weekend…..
I have a notary here in my office. I am more concerned about getting the paperwork I need from the previous owner. I spoke with them yesterday and I can tell you that they did not sound overly motivated to prepare this stuff for me….
On a side note, if any of you are curious about the registration process, it has turned out to be a little bit difficult.
Step 1. I registered the boat on the DNR’s website and learned that the boat has not been registered since 2002 and the prior registration was not in the name of the person I bought it from. This being the case, the boat registration is on temporary hold until I can get a notarized affidavit from the individual that I bought the boat from detailing how he got the boat and his reasoning for not having it registered.
Step 2. Anticipating that this could be somewhat challenging, I called the DNR to see what could be done in the event that said affidavit could not be acquired. They said that I could send the previous owner a certified letter requesting the information and if he did not respond that they would accept a copy of the letter and the delivery confirmation as proof that I had tried. Kind of a pain but really not a huge deal.
Step 3. I went to the tag office to get a new plate for my trailer and hit another roadblock. They informed me that I would have to have a police officer verify the trailer VIN number before the boat could be registered. So, when I got home last night, I hooked the boat up and trailered it to the police station to have it verified. At this point it had become painfully obvious that the means by which the previous owner had acquired this boat were unclear and potentially questionable. Needless to say, I was slightly relieved when the officer called in the number and it had not been reported stolen.
Step 4. I will have to head back up to the tag office and pay an $18 fee for a new trailer tag. I might be able to make it by there today, but the boat registration will likely take another week to sort out.
I am sure that registering a new boat and trailer, or for that matter, a used boat that had a current registration would have been much simpler. But like everything else on this project, this has been a learning experience.
Interesting thought Mike. Can you paint over Line-X, or does it come in other colors than black? I would be concerned that having a black surface on the areas where I am likely to be standing barefoot would draw in a lot of heat. It would sure be easier than glassing though.

This weekend proved to be significantly less productive than I had hoped. I did manage to get the motor up to the shop. They said they were running about a week behind, so I probably won’t have it back until at least next weekend. I also went to West Marine to purchase the fiberglass materials that I needed.
Dave Z. recommended doing a mock-up out of cardboard to get a feel for the glassing process, so that is exactly what I did. I just glassed in a corner with using fiberglass tape at the edges and mat at the floor.
This is a picture of the glass in the curing process. Obviously I am not a pro, but i think with a little work I can achieve the results I am looking for.
Since my marine plywood has still not shown up, I guess I have nothing left to do. Time to go fishing. Looks like carp will be the target today. Hopefully that will be more successful than the boat work this weekend….
I am planning on working on it some this weekend. Hopefully the marine plywood that I ordered will be delivered in time to get some real work done. I will post pictures of any progress. I am also going to drop off the motor for service today.

Here is a shot of the inside of the motor as well. It appears to be in great shape, but it hasn’t been run in quite a while. I plan on taking it to a mechanic to give it good once over before the first trip out. I was considering buying a new one, but this just kind of fell in my lap.
Do you guys notice anything different?
In addition to the new addition……Marine plywood is on it’s way to the house. It should be delivered Friday. This thing is really coming together quicker than I anticipated.
I think you guys have sold me on the marine plywood route. This project has been fun, but I really don’t feel like doing it again in the near future. I am currently doing a little investigation to try and figure out where I can purchase this material. If any of you have any suggestions let me know.
Also, will the marine plywood need any other form of protection if I am going to glass it in?

Sorry Greg, it was not Heineken. It was in fact Bud Light with Lime. It was also however, not my beer. It was my wife’s. So she get points for drinking beer, even if it is a little girly.
You guys got me all freaked out about the moisture issue, so I came home today and hit the interior structure and decks with a couple coats of heavy elastomeric paint. I think that should do the trick. Thanks to everybody who has chimed in with some helpful insight. I have a pretty high level of confidence that this project will be a success.
The back deck looks crooked in the image because it is not screwed down yet.
