That’s what you get for gigging Gar!

Hey BD, do you think Boga Grips would be a good idea for handling these fish

in reply to: Muskie on the fly? #10461

What I really should have said was when I am ready. I only caught my first one last Sun and I caught it with unclean, unholy, foul, spinning gear using live bait. Only the devil himself could have done a worser thing.  Hehehe.

Don’t worry when I get a opening I’ll give you a shout. Here is a shot of my fishing buddy on Sun. These photos look very good edited and cropped but photo bucket kills those edits. I’ll post them again once I save the edits to a new file. You just don’t run into a Red Fox everyday.

One thing you will find out the more you get to know me is that I love to fish for anything and everything. We are truly blessed here in TN with a very diverse fishery including plenty of Muskie places. When you’re ready I’ll show you one of them.

IMO the Remington 1100 20 gauge is the cats meow of automatic shotguns. I have one that is 20 years old and still looks and shoots like new. I also have 2 Belgium Browning’s that are alot more valuable, but don’t shoot near as nice. I love a double barrel for rabbit, over and under for sporting clay. But for hunting birds my 1100 is the one I chose every time. I wish I could quit fishing long enough to use it more. TWRA is concentrating on bringing back the Quail pop and if goes as well as the Turkey restoration did then we will soon be in birds up to our knees. If that happens, then I too will be in the market for a good bird dog.

BD is right about that third shot. Kinda like how both barrels can be handy on a very fast rabbit sometimes. 😮

I hope that you don’t mind hearing from a three time poster, but:  I like the Quick Time idea; I’ve not dug around too much but from my first read I get photo attachments must be made from a web link and not a personal hard drive–wish that were different; from another board I read, and somtimes post on, it seems that even vague references to fishing hot spots can be a point of contention. . . I’d hate to see that happen to your site.

I really enjoy that the tone of your site is personable without being too “chummy”. The photos section is great.

    Thanks

Hey splitshot do you fish the mid TN area?

Zach, when I am posting, if I forget to fill in the subject, or if I am not logged in, it will error and lose all my typing. I use Word and copy and past now to try to prevent this, but it is a problem. The text should be saved if it encounters an error. I don’t know enough about Yabb to fix it if it can be fixed.

    Other then that great site!

Thanks for starting my day off with a laugh Peddler!

    ;D

in reply to: rods manufactured in asia #10428

Yes they are hand wrapped. The finish used on SOME Asian rods dosen’t seem to last very long but other then that they do a fine job. My biggest problem paying $200 for an Asian made outfit is knowing that it only cost $5 or $10 to manufacture.

Whether to buy Asian made rods is a choice we all have to make. I weighed the options and decided to build my own. Now I fish with some of the best rods in the world,

in reply to: It’s Official: CF Designs Boxes Awesome! #10676

I agree, I have four of them. Two with the little threaders. One with the two compartments for shot and indicators and 1.5 cards, and one with four cards to hold plenty of misc flies for backup. I still need one more for my streamers.
They are the best box out there IMO. I sure hope them Nashville ganstas never figure out how much money in gear the average fly fisherman carries with him on stream. Of course in my case he better bring heat if he wants my CF’s.

I really don’t know what were headed for by becoming dependant on countries like China but I bet it isn’t good. Just a few years ago they shot down a US plane and held the pilots hostage…

I buy US or NON CHINA when I can and try to influence others to do the same. It is a losing battle I am afraid.

    Meh… ???

Now you know I don’t do that BD. If I take out a client that want’s to use Trout

in reply to: A Walk In The Woods…. #60319

I like them very much. The Whitetail is one of those shots that makes me want to freeze up, so not to spook the big buck that’s wondered in so close. Then I realize,, it’s just a picture. That picture pulls you in and makes you feel like your there. Zach’s bird hunting photo has the same effect for me. Great job!!! Not sure what PS can do to enhance that one…

I think the bull Elk would be better if you had more of him in the picture. I would like to have seen more of the area he picked to rest in.

in reply to: Opinions wanted on Boga Grips #10687

I have owned a Boca for several years and I have nothing but good to say about them. I don’t oil them or maintian them in any way but they still look brand new. Good ole AMERICAN MADE QUALITY PRODUCT!!! (Need A emoticon flipping a finger to China) I reeeeeally like them when I am Carp fishing with a fly rod. Most people who bad mouthed them are

Impressive! What is the background on the boo shot?

in reply to: Sage 1wt is done! #10391

I got the 1wt from Custom Tackle http://www.customtackle.com/ here in Shelbyville TN. Seems someone ordered it, put a $100 deposit on it, and never picked it up. It had been sitting in the shop for a long time. I asked Bob what he’d take and he replied $50, Merry Christmas. Needless to say I couldn’t turn down a $300+ blank for $50. Bob is a fine fellow and runs a top notch shop that’s been in business for a long time. I highly recommend this shop. His website is kinda dated and seems geared more towards experienced builders so give them a call if you have any questions.

I think if you’re going to build your first rod you might also want to consider using a cheaper blank to hone your skills. http://www.dancraftent.com/loadit.html. Download the Adobe catalog and look for the signature III blanks FRSII7012 is the number for Dan’s 7’ 1 wt for $50. I have built on 4 Dancraft blanks and all of them were arrow straight and perfect in every way. Go to www. rodbuilding.org and do a forum search on “dancraft” for some opinions on his blanks. Also visit some of the site sponsers listed on the left of the page. You should be safe buying from anyone listed on the Rodbuilding.org website.

Both of these companies have treated me very well and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend either of them. I don’t know where you live but there may be a shop near you. If so you might want to take a ride and get to know them.

Here are some other companies I have dealt with when CT didn’t have what I needed but the little mom and pop shops will treat you much better (price cuts) once you establish a relationship with them.
    http://www.mudhole.com
    http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/
    http://www.Cabelas.com

Here is a link with a mirror mirror on the wall that will answer any questions you might have while building. http://www.rodbuilding.org

No matter what anybody tells you DO NOT USE COLOR PRESERVER on guide wraps. This caused a few of my first spinning rods to have guide failures. It seals the thread wraps and prevents the finish from getting to the blank and bonding everything together. There are those who will say if done right it isn’t a problem. I say avoid it at all cost. Even the company who makes it (flexcoat) says not to use it on guide wraps.

Beware, this is an addictive hobby and soon you’ll have more rods then you know what to do with.

in reply to: Cumberland again #10388

I haven’t been on the Cumberland in a few weeks and my last trip was not what I would call a big success. If I were trying for big fish this time of year I would fish close to the Dam and hope for a shad kill. The weather should be getting cold enough to send some Shad through the turbines. Maybe try some white or Shad colored streamers fished slow like an injured Shad. Olive or brown Woolly buggers, Sculpin, Scuds and Sowbugs also should work well this time of year. Eggs could still be working but I suspect the Spawn is over.

Other then that the midges might be your best bet if you fish them often. I don’t midge much so it isn’t something I am very good at yet. It’s always a guessing game when I fish Cumberland. It seems like a different river every time I go so I don’t have any magic fly or location I can recommend. I always just start trying to figure it out and sometimes that river beats me very badly. Once the warm weather comes back the heavy rods and big Streamers should start working for the larger fish again.

Let us know how you do

in reply to: Davy knot #10381

    Hey guys-

Just checking in on the Davy knot.  I’ve caught close to 30 fish on it now, some of them very nice, and I am a convert.  Very sweet knot.

    Zach

I caught a million and a half Skipjack on it this weekend with 4x, 0 knot failures. It passed the ultimate test. It is a keeper.
