I have a question for Zach or some other knowledgable person on the board.
Fly rods that are manufactured in china or korea – are the guides still wrapped on by hand? It would seem they would have to be if it were to be done decently.
I generally buy rods made in the USA but this year I had a $100 gift certificate from Bass Pro. After much deliberation I purchased a $100 BP White River classic in weight and length that I don’t own (trout rod). It is made in china. It’s actually a pretty nice fly rod at any price. Reasonably light and smooth casting. Even the components are pretty much first rate. After I fished with it yesterday I looked at it a little closer and the wraps are pretty close to perfect. One small bump on one of the hookkeeper wraps is the only “defect” I could find on the whole rod.
I’m certainly not going to stop buying American when I can. But it shows there is a place for both american made rods and the imports.

Yes they are hand wrapped. The finish used on SOME Asian rods dosen’t seem to last very long but other then that they do a fine job. My biggest problem paying $200 for an Asian made outfit is knowing that it only cost $5 or $10 to manufacture.
Whether to buy Asian made rods is a choice we all have to make. I weighed the options and decided to build my own. Now I fish with some of the best rods in the world,
Generally speaking you will find the highest quality from far eastern manufacturing starting in South Korea, then going to Taiwan, then Thailand, then mainland China.
Thanks for all the info. Like I said I’m not advocating asian made rods over USA made.
I was just curious about the wrappings. And surprised at the quality of a “made in china” fly rod.
I’ve done my share to support American Fly fishing companies: 2 sage rods, 2 Ross reels, etc, etc.
GregZach, not to go all lawyer on you or anything, but technically speaking, employing 12-14 year olds in a factory *is* using child labor.
