Flies float ???

MemberDo let us know how well it works. I have started using Tungsten beads on most all my BH’s.

MemberGood question Brandon, I read this artical on FAOL and have seen it posted in many other places as well. I also wonder what the Zen casters and cast masters will say bout it.

MemberMy thanks to Mike for this post. I practiced the Davey knot and used it exclusively yesterday and it was perfect with Orvis Mirage 3 and 4X. Not a single fish lost to a failed tippet to fly knot. (several lost to one or the other of 123 million things that can go wrong) It is the best fluorocarbon knot I have used yet. Simple to do(even with numb fingers) it is small and really does seem to be near 100%. Perfect.

Glad you liked it Steve. I’ll try to post these things as I find them.

Zach is looking foward to hearing your stories about Striped Bass. ;D

MemberI buy fluro in bulk 200 yard spools from Seaguar in 6,4, and 2# spools. I use a drill to put in old tippet spools. It is just as good and costs way, way less. I know people will say the actual tippet material is somehow superior but I disagree. In a market as competitive as fishing line I think they would market it in bulk spools if it were really that much better.
BD, I don’t know what your talking about 8)

MemberI use the albright on my streamer leaders where I go from 30 to 17 or 20 to 10. The albright is the best knot I have found for joining line with drastic diameter differance. So far every time the line breaks but the knot holds. My streamer leaders are rarley longer then 4′.

MemberHere is John W’s post from the FF forum.
I agree with March Brown that flouro and mono don’t mix well. Testing for breaking strength is not at all a reliable way to trust a knot.
Flourcarbon has a much higher abraison resistance. For that reason I’ve found that something like 6X fluoro will cut completely through 5X mono. If you use a knot like a double surgeons, blood knot, or similar, the flouro will cause the knot to fail.
I have started using a loop to loop connection for mono to flouro and thus far it is the most reliable connection. It will still fail in the loop knot but I’ve never had the loop connection fail. I’ve had plenty of blood knots and surgeons fail though.
For the connection to the fly with fluoro I use a “Davy”, aka “the knot”, aka “figure 8”. It is a very reliable connection and doest not slip or bind.
John
He followed up with this pic a few days later. And yes I know where this fish was caught, but dang it’s a brute.

I trust his judgment on knots. Joe Humphries on the other hand, might not be so impressed.

MemberNot sure I understand the ?, but what about a perfection loop for the fluro? Goggle it.
I can do a break test and post results if you want. I am thinking about switching to loop to loop for tippet for the exact same reason.

MemberOhh and by the way, welcome PTO.

MemberThe website stated that the knot has 100% knot strength.
My point really is that Fluro and clinch knots don’t mix well and the recommended fluro knot, the trilene knot, is hard to do when you crowd the eye like I tend to do. Factor in a size 20 hook and you really have a problem. Then there is the problem with the 1 or 2″ of squiggly leader you get sometimes from tying the clinch.I will get the boca out soon and put this to rest.
If John endorses it, I trust his judgment.

MemberZach, they don’t pull off, they cut the coating. If you tie a nail knot (I said blood earlier but I meant nail) on a fly line and pull on it till something breaks usually you will find the nail knot will cut into the coating on the fly line until it separates leaving nothing but the core. The more you pull on a nail knot the tighter it gets till it cuts the coating on the line, then there is nothing to hold it. I have done this on brand new line. It wouldn’t be a problem on most outfits, but if I was after big game, I wouldn’t use a nail to connect anything to fly line.
I did find Dan’s board I wish I could get interested in Striper again, maybe soon. I thought about them a few times today in a reply to BD about Loons on the lake.

MemberThe thing I like about the castewell vs the blood is the Castwell will never cut into the line and slip off. I have had blood knots cut the flyline and pull off, leaving a braided piece of thread. The Castwell won’t ever do that. I think it would snag less then loop to loop plus, with a loop to loop there are three possible points of failure. I haven’t fished it yet but will test it and post the results.

You might have to navigate to find the knot. look for fly fishing basics then knots. The Castwell knot.Yes, the Davy knot was invented by Mr Wotton. Another fisherman that I would like to spend some time with some day. And hopefully Dave Whitlock too.
Wilson, Whitlock, Woton. That would be a trip wouldn’t it. I think they all live in Mt Home don’t they?Mike Anderson
MemberLube the ferrule and if it still ticks I would send it back. It would seem like the ferrule wasn’t fitted properly.

MemberThe ears though were warm as toast in the rabbit bomber…a solid investment…and the laughers turned into believers quickly as the wind whistled between their ears…
HA! See, I told you so.
If on your trip to the White this year you should get what we got on our last trip there, you will wish you had my hat.
Ever fished in a Thunder snow? We didn’t either but we did BBQ some ribs in it. There was 8 or 9″ of snow on the ground the next morning.
Luckily, we had stored the boat at Gaston’s covered dock and were able to get back on the water.

MemberWelcome Greg! I would go with the canoe on the Caney for sure but I am a boat man. Start at the dam and ride to Happy for a good starter trip. That would be an easy first trip and some nice fishing and scenery on the way. Let us know how you do and post any other ? you may have.
