MemberI just finished a Sage SLT 1wt that I got a real good deal on, less then $100 for blank and components. I am looking at a reel from Bass Pro Shops, an ultralight 2.5” machined reel that weighs only 2.2oz http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=44559&hvarTarget=search tell me what you think about it. I built this rod with the smallest REC seat I could get, single foot TiCh guides, and modest cork grip. This little gem is light in the hand and has a high quality feel that’s hard to explain.

MemberMikeA,
Where/who did you buy the kit from? I am very interested in building my first rod and that is exactly what I want.

MemberI got the 1wt from Custom Tackle http://www.customtackle.com/ here in Shelbyville TN. Seems someone ordered it, put a $100 deposit on it, and never picked it up. It had been sitting in the shop for a long time. I asked Bob what he’d take and he replied $50, Merry Christmas. Needless to say I couldn’t turn down a $300+ blank for $50. Bob is a fine fellow and runs a top notch shop that’s been in business for a long time. I highly recommend this shop. His website is kinda dated and seems geared more towards experienced builders so give them a call if you have any questions.
I think if you’re going to build your first rod you might also want to consider using a cheaper blank to hone your skills. http://www.dancraftent.com/loadit.html. Download the Adobe catalog and look for the signature III blanks FRSII7012 is the number for Dan’s 7’ 1 wt for $50. I have built on 4 Dancraft blanks and all of them were arrow straight and perfect in every way. Go to www. rodbuilding.org and do a forum search on “dancraft” for some opinions on his blanks. Also visit some of the site sponsers listed on the left of the page. You should be safe buying from anyone listed on the Rodbuilding.org website.
Both of these companies have treated me very well and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend either of them. I don’t know where you live but there may be a shop near you. If so you might want to take a ride and get to know them.
Here are some other companies I have dealt with when CT didn’t have what I needed but the little mom and pop shops will treat you much better (price cuts) once you establish a relationship with them.

No matter what anybody tells you DO NOT USE COLOR PRESERVER on guide wraps. This caused a few of my first spinning rods to have guide failures. It seals the thread wraps and prevents the finish from getting to the blank and bonding everything together. There are those who will say if done right it isn’t a problem. I say avoid it at all cost. Even the company who makes it (flexcoat) says not to use it on guide wraps.
Beware, this is an addictive hobby and soon you’ll have more rods then you know what to do with.

MemberSweet. Stripers here we come.
If Mike uses the 1wt for a striper, I definitely want to be there with a camera.
