MemberZach from now till Oct Striper and Hybrid are on my hit list big time. White Bass are a way to pass time when the Striper and Hybrids take a break during high sun or low water periods.

MemberThere are times when fish are close to the boat but they are few and far apart for me. I’ve heard of folks using mod rods for shooting heads and some even recommend them to folks. My question is how to drive a hook into a hard mouth with a mod rod and 400 grains of line in the water. I have issues with fast rods doing this sometimes. BTW I’m not trying to argue, just having a discussion and maybe learn something here.

MemberIt would depend a lot on what you want the rod to do IMO. Throwing 400 grain shooting heads or cutting into the wind from the deck of a flats boat with a fat tapered saltwater line I’d stay with a fast rod. I own and use several 7, 9, and 10 wt outfits and I can honestly say each time I switch over to my Xi2’s its like butter. I can’t for the life of me imagine what a moderate 9wt would be good for.

MemberVery nice post Cameron! Thank you for that.

MemberSome of the really nice lenses I’ve been drooling over mostly the bigger ones, have filters built in that can be turned inside the lens.

MemberI’m reloading windows on my usual net surfing my PC as I type. Worst attack I’ve ever had! Glad it wasn’t my home PC with all my Images.

MemberDamn,, Thanks for sharing.

MemberGave up photoshop and illustrator on version 7 and 10… I just shoot it in raw and process it in lightroom as I’d process in a dark-room… every once in a blue moon I’ll put it in PS to burn or dodge a BW.. but that’s it… I found myself focusing on what I could do in the application more than what I should be doing in the field…
Absolutely! As I struggle to learn this hobby I’ve decided that I hate post-processing images on a PC. Its way too time consuming and time is always in short supply with a real job, a side job, a dog, two kids and a wife, a golf, photography, and fishing addiction, and a website. I may never equal what some of you PS masters can do but I’m ok with that. Maybe someday I’ll get better at seeing what my camera sees and make the adjustments in the field.

MemberWhen it’s “on” a bunch of flash wrapped on a hook works as well as anything. I usually start off with a small chartreuse and white or gray and white clouser. It’s hard to beat a clouser.

MemberI’m interested in them but wanted to see more images to get a feel for it. Thanks Matt. Labrati do you have any old Minolta glass laying around you’d like to part with?

MemberI agree about the boats John. Some boats are better then others even. A drap canoe style boat seems to work best. Square bright boats with sparkling gel coat like my Supreme, not so much. I wish they’d sell a drab colored boat but they won’t. I could almost pet the wildlife in the olive and tan Riverhawk boat I had.
Nice shots, are you calling them in or hunting on foot? I’ve got a few places I think calling them could be pretty productive. Last year I was fishing a run and kept hearing something behind me. When I turned to look there was an adult Owl (smaller species) feeding two very small ones in a hollowed out hole in a big tree. I had elected to leave the camera that day because I was wading. I should have at least carried my P&S. Stuuupid!! Owls are pretty incredible birds and rarely seem by most people. When I’ve been fortunate enough to be in the company of them they don’t seem to be too intimidated by human presence. One actually let me get really close a few years ago but all I had was a P&S.
Here are a few of those shots.

There’s a Heron nesting site on the river I fish most of the time. In the spring you could really get some nice shots there but they are high in the trees. It seems like every now and them one of them will land in the wrong nest and all hell breaks loose.

MemberYea this one was deep in a tangle of branches. I might have gotten some better lighting shots had my fishing partner not Hootie hooo’d when I lowered my camera. That “somewhat sharp” in flight shot was all luck as I just start pointing, following, and holding the button down.
Earlier that weekend we saw a young Bald eagle but so far they aren’t boat friendly at all. About 2 to 300 yards is as close as I can get to an eagle. This young one in particular is an absolute GIANT with what has to a 6′ wing span! I hope I never piss it off.I’ve been watching the Bigma for a while but I’m holding out right now. I’d hoped to move up to a 300mm G and a tele but it’s getting further and further outa reach since the A700 release.#%

MemberThe SA Streamer Express is all I have experience with. It has a smaller dia running line then a lot of the others due to the single strand mono core. It shoots like a rocket and tangles less then the larger Braided multifilament cores IMO. For heavy tippet /bigger fish and snag rich environments I like the Braided multifilament core lines better (SA Wet Tip Express). They just seem to be tougher.
The size depends a lot on what you want to throw with it. If you like to throw big junk go with the 250. I almost guarantee you’ll love the way the SASE rockets out your guides.

MemberGoogle rod action fast slow. You won’t find anything about recovery rate. A fast rod recovers faster because less of it bends. A whippy rod can’t also be a fast rod.
Mike Anderson
MemberBear in mind that allot of my knowledge of blanks is also from a conventional standpoint. If you’re talking conventional blanks, recovery speed has no value. For those rods fast and slow blanks have always been determined by how far from the tip the blank bends. It doesn’t surprise me that fly rod companies are twisting the term and using it as a selling tool. Gota do something to sell a $700 stick of graphite.
Mike Anderson
MemberZach fast and slow as long as I’ve been around rods has always been about how much of the rod bends and has nothing to do with speed of recovery. In fact speed as in Recovery speed is a term I’ve only recently started hearing.

MemberI’m glad someone else finally posted the line floats like a turd problem. IMO the first thing a floating line should do is float.

MemberDamn Kendal those are great! Those Deer shots were super, very unique.
