    Awesome!

Thanks again for the advice. What lens did you use for those shots?

I’m looking at an 80-200mm 2.8 G lens and was wondering if I paired that lens with a 1.4 TC if it could pretty much “do it all”? The reviews I read said the 1.4 TC had little to no effect on IQ. Seems this would be the best setup for on the go shooting. Am I off in my thinking?

Thanks Carter. Actually Sony is offering the Zeiss as the kit lens with the new A700’s. I hear there is an A900 in the works too. Maybe Sony is going to become a formidable player in the DLSR business? I’m enjoying being on the front end and getting the less known, lower priced equipment.

They finally dropped the price a little on the big flash and I ordered it Thursday. I played around with some indoor stuff at a family get together with a 50mm f1.7 last week without a flash and they turned out great. That little lens is pretty sweet. I haven’t been at this long but from what I’ve read about Minolta they made some pretty good glass back in the day (Japan). I’m happy with the results so far and I haven’t broken the bank yet. I also don’t have any shots like John Bennett’s Blue jay either. That photograph haunts me.

    PS to Mike

I disagree with your statement that if we quit buying the prices will go down.  If we quit buying the companies will go away.  To Asia.  Or worse. And then the really good gear will cost much more.

I should clarify my statement a little.
I don’t mind paying an unreasonable price if I get exceptional quality. Examples: Sage (ultra straight) Blanks, Renzetti, Windstopper, Gore Tex, Ross, Lamson, Yamaha, Scientific Anglers, TFO, etc. What I’m referring to is waaaay overpriced stuff like $400+ rain coats, $700 waders, $12 box of “fly fishing” sinkers, $100 spool of fishing line, you get the point.

A LOT of companies have already gone offshore and it wasn’t because they weren’t doing well.

When we stop paying it, the prices will drop. I’m doing my part.

Those were all in TN around Gordensville.

once to resize them. Other then that I didn’t touch them or use any filters to be fair to the lens (I’m not bragging just wanted a fair lens review). IMO it’s heads and shoulders above the kit and I’m finally happy with the results.

The last two were in there from a report on my board. The light was really bad but the back drop was cool. Any suggestions on how to handle a shot like this? Would a Pol filter have made that much diff?

Well,,, guess what my replacement pair of Costas are doing already??? This pair lasted all of three months.

I haven’t used the Zeiss much yet Carter, the landscape around here right now is pretty sad with all the greenery gone. What little I have used it so far I’ve noticed the photos require very little adjustment to suit my tastes. My fishing is in a slump too so no fish pics and that’s what I really bought it for, well that and landscapes.

Thanks it was hard to get good any kind of sharp images shooting from a 17′ boat in open water and 20mph winds. I was using the “Beercan” 70-210 Minolta lens. This lens has a cult following and so far I really like the results I’m getting from it.

I was still wishing I could get closer to the Loons but they would go under every time I got close. So today I looked at a nice Sigma 400mm lens and was this close to buying it. Logic took over and I let it pass for now. I’ve got 6 more days till the auction is over…  I wonder how good the results would be shooting with this lens without a tripod?

in reply to: Rio Gold Line, anybody used it yet? #22446

I haven’t done anything but use it Morsie. During a trip I’ll end up running it through my T-shirt a few times to clean it and if that doesn’t do it, and often it won’t, I’ll rub it down in Gink outa desperation. That usually remedies the problem short term.
I’m anal about my drift and any sink in my line aggravates the hell outa me. I think the extra weight might be the reason for the sink. I’m gonna try really cleaning the line and treating it with some Zipcast. If after that I notice it sinking more then my other lines I’ll part with it.

in reply to: Rio Gold Line, anybody used it yet? #22444

I’ve had it for over a month now. I use it on an SLT 5wt. It casts great, roll casts great, seems a bit heavy, and floatation could be ALOT better. The sinking is problem and I end up having to treat the line just about every trip. I won’t be buying it again.

I shot a trip offshore catching false albacore on a bright sunny day with my WB set to tung… Everything was BLUE. Since I didn’t use RAW the photos were trash…. I use RAW alot more now…. I wish my camera had a one shot button to switch to raw so I could shoot casual shots in JPG and be able to shoot a RAW on the fly.

in reply to: Cool new striper fly #55672

Yea I do it when the cool weather has run off the drunken boaters. Here’s a snap shot of what my Graph looks like when I find a school. Note they are all feeding on bait balls well below the surface. If I waited to fish to surface feeding fish I’d go a long time (months) without even casting.
EDIT: I do fish one small lake (80 acres) that is stocked with Hybrids and those fish do come up around dark to feed regularly. Some places fish just behave differently then others.

in reply to: Cool new striper fly #55670

Doesn’t really look that impressive to me? But I spend most of my time beneath the surface where the majority of our fish are. The surface blitz is a rare sight in these parts. They usually only happen early and late and at certain times of the year. Most of those times the fish are eating Young Of the Year Shad that are small. A large offering is a waste of time. Plus I like to fish all day. ;D

I’m not knocking the pattern at all but I really doubt it’ll replace the crease fly or a good foam popper.

I’m with Lando once you tie it enough it’s an easy knot. I use my teeth to hold tag ends so I can reposition my fingers.

in reply to: Cow Standing Factor #21961

I think it’s my strong positive attitude and charming good looks that brings em in. Or maybe that both of my boats have very bright white floors…

Something else I’ve picked up on after lots of hours on the water is when I see lots of butterflies (usually around the boat) the fishing is almost always very good?

Those are caddis, Tonto – it’s called a hatch.   🙂

Haaa haa very funny Dunigan. Keep it up and I’ll microwave the rest of your Rio tippet.

in reply to: Cow Standing Factor #21953

My grandfather told me about the cows a long time ago too. When I see squirrels, birds, and lots of other animals out and about feeding I always assume it’s a good time to be on the water. I also look for animal activity when I’m on the water to see how it relates to fish activity. I’m confident that when you see lots of wildlife the fishing is better to an extent but not enough that I’d stay home due to a lack of wildlife activity.

in reply to: Carp flies……. #21852

On the mud flats they kick up mud and silt and it falls on their backs making them even harder to spot. I just look for the plumes of mud and target those fish.

Here’s BD hooked up in a typical flats fishing scenario TN style.
