Check out my spring Carp/Drum/Buffalo spot!

Here is what I’ve found that works around here.

Clear water big Carp = no flash! Dark natural colored bugger style flies with rubber legs work best. Big Trout patterns work well also like #12 PT’s,  GRHE’s, etc.

In stained pond water this guy is a Carp slayer!

Find a mudding fish and put this fly in his grill. You’ll see it’s gills flare when he sucks it in then just set the hook and hold on. Sight fishing to Carp is one of my favorite things to do with a fly rod period!

Got the lens last night but I had to sign for it so it was dark when I picked it up… The overall feel is much different then the China kit lens. The Zeiss is MUCH heavier and just feels like quality. My kit lens and the other 70-300 POS kit lens go on Ebay this week.

I’m finally starting to warm up to the Sony and I think I’ll be happy with my lens selection until I have a need for a high speed 300mm. I don’t see that need anytime soon.
I’ll post some pics with the Zeiss as I get them.

Ian I’m Pretty sure Simms still has a few made here. But my point is why pay US made prices for Chinese goods that are probably made by the same children that make the cheaper ones? I was looking for a new one this year myself because I got battery acid on my old one (still doesn’t leak!) and I ran across a couple for almost $400! I thought surely for that price I’m buying American right,,, wrong! Made in China.

Yea I have a problem with everything getting outsourced to a child and slave labor communist country while prices remain the same or go up for Pete’s sake. I’m fed up with paying damn good money and getting a piece of CRAP. But that’s a political topic so I’ll refrain.

    Gore-Tex!

I’d be hesitant to buy the $350+ made in China stuff. If your gonna buy made in china stuff go with something affordable like Cabelas Gore Tex wading jacket. I still love mine after 4 years now.

Anybody can catch 20″ ers but to get a 3″ little gem to deep throat an 18 PT takes skilz. ;D

Question to the Camera guys. On the Dam photo if you look hard you can see a blue spot. Some of the others had several blue spots in them. I’m assuming they were light from the stars behind the camera because I didn’t cover the viewfinder.

Thanks it’s a big learning curve from a point and shoot. Sometimes I feel like I take one step forward and two steps back. Maybe one day it’ll click and I’ll finally have it.
I had no idea how much money it took to feed this obsession…

Drake’s getting big all right. Just last night we caught him trying to give it to a little poodle we’re watching. I was cheering him on but my wife was not so understanding..

Thanks for the input Chad! I was stuck with a 50mm macro (left my camera bag at the top of that trail and my tripod in the car…).

Richard for me it was the extra features that swayed me to buy Sony over Cannon. Nikon was too pricey. Konica Minolta had plenty of lenses out there from $20 to $2500 so I knew I could take it as far as I wanted to. I’ve spent lots of time doing R&D and have picked some really nice older lenses all under $300 each. They’re a little slower to focus and they’re old but they all work well and got fantastic reviews on most of the respected camera review sites.
Until I get a similar Cannon/Nikon Camera in my hands and see that it really is more Camera then user ability that make good shots I’ll stick with my cheaper camera.

There is some regret for not buying Cannon I’ll admit that. However, I’m considering an upgrade already and the Sony A700 sure looks good and is getting good reviews. Will I do it again, I don’t know???

I’ve been looking at the E3 one pretty hard. If I move to another camera it would be a tough choice between this and a Nikon whatever. The features on the Olympus blow most everything else in its price range away.

Thanks for the advice! If the sun comes out again before May I’ll test it out. I did pick up a B+W 55mm.

in reply to: EP Flies #55674

This is just a fly I sat down and tied with a big Shad in mind. It has taken a fair share of Striper but it is a big fly and I use it only for big fish. I don’t have a name for it nor can I tell you where to look for a step by step but if you tie much you’ll figure it out. I’ve seen some of the takes on this fly and there was no doubt in the Stripers mind about what he was eating. One of them was a 15 pounder that slowly swam up 20′ from the boat and inhaled the fly, then slowly turned to swim away..

BTW it could be a deceiver variation or a number of other flies already exist out there?? I did come up with the pattern by trial and error and it works very well at casting, catching and lasting.

I tie in a 40 pound wire loop first
Several white saddle hackles on bottom and sides of hook
Mix some angel hair into the EP fiber (artic Ice for the white EP and Holo Silver for the gray)
Tie in a piece of the white EP mixture on top of the hook.
A little pinch of pink on top of the white (not needed but I like the look)
Tie in a piece of the gray EP mixture on top of the hook.
No need to worry about pretty here just pile it all up we’ll hide it later.
At any time in this process throw in some red, pearl, or holo flashabou for effect.
Next glue the hell outa all the pile with HH hard as nails.
Now tie in white bucktail on the bottom and both sides of the hook
Tie in some gray on top and build a nice head.
Finish it off with EZ body sparkle glue or Loon hard head sprinkled with fine glitter.
    Glue on eyes with goop

Fish it with a shooting head and move it in quick darts with a pause. the big Deer hair head pushes alot of water and we all know what that does to those big lateral lines on a Striper!

    Shad

    Rainbow Trout

I’ve yet to find anything better then mcfly foam treated with scotch guard when depth change isn’t required every other cast. For floating a river with varying depths I like the football style..

That sounds like a fly sampler for the White River in Nov. 😛

Nice photo Zach and what a handsome fellow. 😎

That was my best fish ever on a #20. That’ll be a tough one for me to beat.
