Its a constant f4 so that’d make it an f8. It does have a tendency to search in low light so maybe 1.5x or none?

I read something last night that really caught my attention. The image was a photo of a small figurine shot wide open. In the background the Bokeh effect was dramatic. It said that in the photo a Shallow DOF was used to draw the viewer to the subject. I had never thought of it that way. I always just thought of Bokeh as a cool effect but it really does focus your attention to the subject. Shooting with that thought in mind is something else I’d never giving much attention to either. Trying to Draw attention never really crossed my mind. I’d just shoot away and hope one came out cool.

I also read about IR filters last night. I took pics of the LED on my TV remote and found out it will capture IR light. The examples used in the book using an IR filter were stunning to say the least. I want to try this.

Well it seems I’m not alone in my opinion. One of these days I’ll learn to investigate everything and everyone on google before buying anything!

I fully expect I’ll have to get my credit card company involved to get a refund.

Well I really haven’t even made it into the hands on sections yet. Mostly I’m learning all about the hardware which is where I was absolutely lost. This book explains it all in mid level detail which is all I want to know about how it works.
Anyhow here is my latest couple of photos of our newest addition (No name yet). Yea, I know I’m cheating using puppy photos as an example.

I didn’t photoshop these at all but I did play with them a little since I shot them in Raw.

Drifter I might have gotten a lemon but like I said the head was broken right out the package (threads stripped and it looked used). Dealing with customer service was a pain at Amvona, i.e. 15 to 20 min wait each time to get with a real person. Then when the leg broke they told me 4 times I would have to talk to Jimmy somebody and they would have him call me. Four times (four days) he never called. Finally they just put me on hold forever (no answer). So I called and tried the BUY NEW AMVONA PRODUCT option and got right thru… Ohh and guess who answered…. Yep ole Jimmy himself. He promised I’d get my refund but it aint over yet and I suspect I’ll have to remind them they awe me $100.

That was my first experience with this company and DT so yea I got a sour taste in my mouth from it. I’m slowly learning that even the so called high end stuff that comes from China isn’t worth the cardboard it’s wrapped in.
I’ve replaced both China kit lenses for my camera for Japan Prosumer lenses from 20 years ago and the difference is amazing. There’s some good glass out there and it can be had for = < what the new inferior kits lenses cost.

in reply to: Why do we buy these high end reels? #20681

Ever caught 4 to 8 pound fish on 6 and 7X? Trout reels do need drag and a very good one at that. With that said I think $300 should cover any Trout reel and to spend more is a waste. My Lamson LS was $99 on sale and it has an awesome drag system. It’s been getting put to the test all month.

in reply to: Sage fly rod durability question #20450

I’m usually not one to defend the big guys but I will here since this thread has gone astray. I catch large hard fighting fish with some regularity and I use Sage almost exclusively. Yes I’ve broken them and seen them broken. Once when a big Hybrid took a friends Xi2 under the boat and around the motor guess what,, the rod broke. Once when I had a Sage stowed in the boats rod holder and fell on it,,,, it broke. Bottom line is all rods break when misused.

Very nice! A job well done.

in reply to: Awesome Tarpon video! #20101

I can’t tell you how many years I watched Flip and others catch these fish on the fly and just didn’t get it? When I finally hooked my first Tarpon this year I finally got it. I still can’t shake it, what a fish!

Bob have you built on any of Dan’s blanks? They are sweeet blanks and right up there with any of the big companies IMO. I’ve built a few FT’s and SigV’s. I fished the new 9’ SigV 5wt this weekend and it is just an absolute pleasure to cast. Some rods just want to make pretty casts and this is one of them.

in reply to: 11 footish one handed rod? #21115

At that price I can’t justify building it. Its the first factory rod I’ve bought in years.

in reply to: taking the plunge! #20213

    Good advice Rich.

    Prep those guide feet

Take your time and keep plenty of denatured alcohol and a good alcohol lamp or bic lighter close by when you finish the rod.

Color Preserver is for decorative wraps. Don’t use it on guide wraps. I’ve seen so many guide failures where CP was used that I’ve sworn it off for good.

in reply to: Costa Del Mar 580 Lenses #22092

Got a call last night from Costa while I was on the golf course so they left a msg. They have decided to go ahead and send me a new replacement pair in the mail.

in reply to: Costa Del Mar 580 Lenses #22088

A post I made on my board.

Costa Del Mar glasses. I’ve owned costa for years and I love their product. I bought a new pair of Costa glasses because my old ones are big and hot in the summer and I wanted a smaller less sweaty pair. After about three months the lenses on my new Costas are delaminating around the edges. I have two other pair that are much older and heavier and no doubt are made from real optical glass and not the “lightweight Glass like material” used in today’s lenses. They swear they are glass and I swear they aint!
I called (not toll free) and told them my problem with the new glasses. They said we’ll send a stamp so you can just send them back and we’ll make it right. Well I get the replacements in a week only to find out that  where they took out the lenses to replace them they tore the finish off the frame all around the lens. They look really bad. I’m left wondering how something like this got past QC?

I thought for sure I’d get some some satisfaction from talking again to customer service, wrong…

Well the saga continues… I called to tell them about my issue and before I could get it out the lady said “are the frames are flaking?”. My guess is either she did the half ass repair herself or this isn’t the first time this has happened. I still don’t understand how or why any shop with a brand to protect would let something like this out the door. Anyway guess what, I get to send them back AGAIN. Not we’re very sorry this has happened we’ll get you a new pair on the way ASAP just send the other pair back when you can. Nope, I get to waste more of my time babysitting a company that obviously has no idea how to keep customers.

I have a total of five pair of Costas. Two eliminators old style that you can’t get anymore and are the best river fishing glasses I’ve ever worn period ( when something is that good I go ahead and get another just in case). One pair of Wahoo for bright lake conditions. The new pair that is nothing like the old ones for some reason? And my wife has a pair. I agree the older ones I have are top shelf but,,, The last pair of Wahoos I bought scratched right outa the box while cleaning them and have scratched easily. The other new pair has had nothing but issues. I can’t help but wonder if they have started cutting corners thinking their name will keep people coming back. I can get glasses that scratch easily and don’t last long at Wal-Mart for 1/20 the price.

I wrote Costa a letter explaining the situation hoping the right person would read it and make it right. Wrong again….

Two/Three days ago I sent Costa Customer Service an email explaining the situation hoping for an alternative solution. They have yet to reply…

So you might wanna might ask the rep why they treat people this way before you shell out $250+ for a pair of 580’s. They totally screwed up my brand new glasses that were having defective lenses replaced at the factory and sent them back to me in that condition. This is the time when I need my glasses most as you know Zach. They wouldn’t send me a new pair, let me borrow a pair, or even express emotion about what they did. Just send them back and we’ll see what we can do. I’m done with them so when/if I ever hear from them and get my glasses back they should be new. I’ll make you a real good deal on them. I’ll be buying Ocean Waves for my next pair.

I have an SLT 1wt that sits at home most of the time. Any wind at all and you can forget it. I love my Dancraft SigV 3wt.

in reply to: Rod Warranties #19783

I can build a best of the best brand name rod for $300 not including my labor. I get the blank for about 250. The guy selling it makes a nice profit from that $250. The blank company makes a nice profit from what they sold it to that guy for.
