Advice heeded…..I’ll definitely go thin. I’ll use this lens mostly for “on the water” shots where hopefully I will see a lot of sunny weather and harsh light.

Well…….if things go as planned…..I should have a Tokina 12-24mm in my grubby little hands this Thursday. I plan to give it a workout on the trip to Katmai this summer. I’m looking for a decent low profile circular polarizer that won’t break the bank. Can one be had for under 100 bones? I know that eliminates the Nikon and Hoya….Tiffen or B&W maybe?

I’m thinking of foregoing a UV filter for this lens simply to avoid vignetting issues.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

The Pass is open…..that’s good to hear. I know the folks in Cooke City love that……let the onslaught of the Tourons begin. I really like traveling the Chief Joseph Highway as well. Lots of trout water there.

I know this is your stompin’ grounds…..do you know who owns the Two-Dot Ranch at the eastern end of the Chief Joseph Highway? That’s a big ass ranch!

I’ve been backpacking and flyfishing the Yellowstone Nat Park and Beartooth Wilderness area for the past 15 years. I usually go in mid-to-late July each summer for ten (10) days. I’ve learned where to cut costs and have shaved it down to $900 for all ten days. This includes airfare from ATL to Billings (typically $350) and splitting the cost of a rental car between four adults.

In a nutshell…..stay in the backcountry (which costs nothing), eat Mountain House freeze-dried, with a stay at Roosevelt Lodge on day one, day five and day nine. The stay at Roosevelt gives us an opportunity for hot showers and meals….and to recharge before heading back into the backcountry.

Gas costs are minimal since they are split four ways and once we arrive, the car sits at the trailhead.

We could trim cost more by staying away from the lodge but it makes for a nice break. We save a little money by having a fly swap between the four of us….prior to the trip, where we typically tie up a bunch of terrestrial patterns.

I’ve always had good luck catching crappie on a white Crazy Charlie. They are very easy to tie if you haven’t tried yet. I tie them on stainless hooks so I can also use them in the salt.

Don’t want to hijack the thread but would like to get some input now that we are talking about magazine subscriptions………

For the past two months, I’ve been receiving both Field & Stream and Backpacker magazines. I had subscribed to both a few years back but did not renew my script. All of a sudden they start showing up again. I figure one of two things have happened:

1. Someone got them for me as a gift (unlikely) or…

2. I’m getting scammed and will receive a bill any day now saying my account is extremely overdue and they will kidnap my firstborn if they do not receive immediate payment.

Anyone else have this happen?

I forgot to mention….I’m not driving the Tundra now. My oldest son was determined to buy a used truck. He was looking at garbage and I hated to see him get beat out of his hard-earned money. So…..being the caring father that I am, I sold him my Tundra at about half it’s value. I’m now driving his 2001 Tacoma which will be given to my youngest son this summer. Can you tell….I’m getting hosed. 🙂

So I’m out of a vehicle. I love the Tundra but the new ones are only gettin 13 to 16 mpg.

Update….with diesel well above 4.00 a gallon…I still haven’t commited. I’ve driven a few and liked what I saw….but the dealers ain’t budging on price. The reliability of American made siesel pickups is nothing to get excited about. So….I’ve just about settled on a V6 tacoma with camper shell….although I value Joel’s feedback….he said the mpg goes south when towing the boat. The Tundras are nice for towing with a comfy interior but they also suck a lot of gas.

Kevin, I feel your pain. I fish the Great Smoky Mountain National Park quite a bit. I also fish the Hiwassee in TN a lot. Inside the boundaries of GSMNP….you can use either a NC or TN license. I usually buy the non-resident TN license so I’m good inside the Park as well.
