The Itinerant AnglerOk, guys, so I figured out what went wrong this weekend.
Someone in Opelika, Alaska tried to download the Charles Jardine podcast 168,000 times.

Steve K.MemberZach,
You sure it’s not Opelika, AL? Never heard of the one in AK.
What if you required the podcast user to have an account and sign in to avoid any shenanigans? Would that prevent it?

The Itinerant AnglerDrifter, there are a number of things I can do, several of which I am pursuing and most of which are likely to land said person in front of a Sheriff’s Deputy pretty darn quick.

MemberIf this proves to be verified as an attack, I will swear out an affidavit in front of my paralegal and mail it to his county sheriff’s office within the hour of my learning for sure.
Call Senator Stevens and tell him someone’s trying to plug up Alaska’s Internet tubes.

InactiveSo far I like the Deadliest Catch hypothesis…definately one of Capt. Phil’s kids.

MemberWhat exactly does someone have to gain by doing something like that?

Mike McKeownMemberDrifter, there are a number of things I can do, several of which I am pursuing and most of which are likely to land said person in front of a Sheriff’s Deputy pretty darn quick. My host has given me unlimited bandwidth for the forseeable future so we can track the guy even better if this happens again. That would be a really bad move on my attacker’s part (and I now believe this was a deliberate DOS attack). I’ve opened up the appropriate channels with the FBI, I’ve identified the person’s true home address (it is not in the remotest part of Alaska, I can tell you that), and I’ve got his ISP, Charter Communications, checking his traffic logs right now. If this proves to be verified as an attack, I will swear out an affidavit in front of my paralegal and mail it to his county sheriff’s office within the hour of my learning for sure.

MemberWhat exactly does someone have to gain by doing something like that? I mean if I were to rob a bank it would be either for A: the money or B: to see if I could get away with it. What would this person gain…just mess up the site a bit? Isn’t it backed up anyway? I’m confused about the motive here?
The motive can be to simply interrupt traffic to the site, or force the host into restarting or rebooting the server or services that may allow the attacker to execute remote code on the target machine.

The Itinerant AnglerLabrati –
You are certainly correct that the poor schlub in Beckley, West Virginia who is about to be visited by his state police could have been a zombie. Probably was. If that’s the case, I’ll actually feel a lot better – I’d rather be the subject of a random DOS attack against Network Solutions than the specific target. On the other hand if he actually targeted me, and if he is just plain unsophisticated enough to assume that a single proxy bounce through Opelika, Alaska will protect him, or that I will in any way hesitate to burn his life down, he’s mistaken.
Mike’s right – I’m a nice guy, but you do not want me across the table from you.
