Excellent ideas!
I wanted this thread to concentrate more along the lines of how to pack your bags so that:
– you are legal as far as the airlines go (bag within dimensions and weight limits)
– how to get all your crap to your destination without incurring extra costs
– minimize financial loss by minimizing theft and damage of your high-dollar goodies.As you all have experienced……size and weight restrictions are purely subjective to a degree. I fear that I will get to the ticket counter to check-in with my $800 non-refundable ticket and the agent says…….“..your checked bag is 3 pounds too heavy and one inch to long……that’d be $150 dollars please.”
Your flight leaves in 45 minutes and it’s already overbooked. So whaddya do except bitch and moan and hand over the cheese. Extortion at it’s best. I see it happening quite a bit now that all the airlines are hurtin’.

I’d highly suggest you get in touch with Aaron Sago over at NGTO.org. He has fought this same battle and seems to have won. Every now and then there is a post from russianbrides.com…..but not often. He also does this stuff for a living as well.

I agree with you….with regard to small streams and bamboo. I’ve got a Mike Brooks 4 weight that is 7′ 6″ in length that goes with me to the Smokies quite a bit. Usually when I’m fishing the high altitude brookie stuff (we’re talking Smokies so wind isn’t much of a factor) I’m backpacking. I’m not quite as nervous about strapping the glass rod to the pack as I would be with the grass rod.
Either one is sweet when panning for brookies.

My favorite small stream rod is a 6′ 6″ Diamondglass fiberglass rod in a 3weight. Nice and slow and loads well with just a small amount of line.
I hear the ice is breaking up on the Russian and a few hardy souls are already floating the Kenai.. July can’t get here quick enough.
Just found out I’ll be staying at Ingram’s a few days and doing a flyout for silvers on the farside of Cook Inlet……………then it’s off to Katmai!

I’ve purchased shrink tubing at both Lowe’s and Home Depot in the ‘lectrical section. I also thought about using a heat gun. I suppose an alcohol lamp or candle would give a more concentrated heat source though.

Also…..I fished with Henry’s Fork Anglers last summer. This past Christmas I received a Christmas card from Mike Lawson thanking me for my business and inviting me back with a $50 discount on a guided trip…….I know the guide business is very competitive and I think these small personal touches are what separates the average guides from the professionals.
Not as sophisticated and refined as Kevin’s design…..but when and if…..I start MY guide service……..this will be my logo. ::)
Let me know how many hats, bumper stickers or t-shirts you’ll need.
This little anecdote is for all the guides on this message board…..
I had an opportunity to fish with a well-known guide in Alaska in ’06. I was sharing his boat with a close friend of mine that has fished with this guide previously. There was one thing on that trip that really impressed me as a customer. The guide had obviously maintained a very detailed journal of my friends previous trips with him. While on the water the guide would make statements like:
“This run is where you caught that big rainbow in ’04 isn’t it?”
“I seem to remember you like to fish for pike?” Wanna give ’em a shot this afternoon?”
I hope it doesn’t rain like it did last time we fished together.”
“Are you still living in Atlanta?”
As I said…that really impressed me. I guess what I’m saying is this tactic might be that little extra that keeps customers coming back year after year along with referrals.
Just sayin.
Zach….I fished that area since I was a kid….and anytime there is that much rain…the river is typically too muddy to fish. Oh well. All those UGA insignias jinxed you guys.
Lets see…Gay Georgia and Rod Bender……probably ajoke there somewhere.
