What waters will you fish in case I’m in the area which is usually every summer? I plan to be in Kalispel and Missoula next summer.
Thanks Cameron. He had not perfected the Bandito pose at that time however he did know to hold the fish in close proximity to the water in case he dropped it.
Both my sons began backpacking and flyfishing with me as early as 7 years old. My youngest son spent 5 days with me camping and fishing the 3rd Meadow of Slough Creek when he was 7. He caught more than his share of the big dumb cutts on foam hoppers. Needless to say…barbless hooks are in order.
Go for it…..but keep it fun for them.

The brown truck delivered my TFO Axiom today. ….6 weight streamer rod for those beefy Russian River rainbows! I appreciate all the AK updates. I’ll be on the Kenai 07/19 through 07/24 (staying at Ingram’s in Cooper Landing) and then heading to Brook’s Camp for a week after that. If we can hook up, the Alaskan Amber is on me.
Put me down for beauty any day. Heck….I don’t even need to fish. I recall one summer morning I sat streamside in Yellowstone National Park and watched a cutt feed on midges for about an hour-and-a-half. I guess I’m getting old.
Last time I was in Athens….someone poured beer on me ::)

I played with Mapquest a little and found:
If you drop down through Arkansas…you can hit the White, Red and Norfolk Rivers without too much of a detour. If you go through Chattanooga, the Hiwassee River in TN is nearby.
With all that said….if you want to take the family and kids for an “entertaining” vacation and want to do a little fishing on the side…….go to Yellowstone! They’ll be happy, you’ll be happy, and your bank account will be happy. Mileage to Mouseville and YNP are about the same from Kansas City.
Arkansas seems to have more than it’s share of shady developers. Anyone ever floated the White River near “Ranchette” access?
I tie up a foam version that the Yellowstone cutts seem to love. I cut the foam to approximate length, then burn the ends with a candle….this will give the ends a rounded shape. Wrap a dry fly hook with a little black thread, attach the body via the thread, palmer a small piece of grizzly hackle. Done. Simple and effective.

My Smokies rod for the jungle streams is a 3weight 6-foot Diamondglass (fiberglass) rod. It’s a slow action that will load with a minimum of line.
I’ve backpacked YNP for years and can’t wait to get back! When you are in the backcountry, you’re away from the crowds of tourons and best of all it’s free! With recent drought and hot weather, I’ve added the nearby Beartooths to my itinerary.
Thanks for the excellent report Abe. I’m headed to Destin next weekend with a sack full of new flies. copious amounts of overpriced flyfishing gear along with a camera body with lenses. I also plan to wade the surf and catch nothing. I know the pompano are prolly there this week, will disappear the week I’m there, only to return when we head north. If I’m really feeling good, I’ll head over to bayside and tramp through the fishless grass flats.
