I’ve tested it exstensively in the Smokies, Yellowstone and the Beartooths with no complaints.
yeah Nate….you read my mind. I’ve been reading all I can find on diesels. Looks like either a F250(Izusu), Dodge 2500(Cummins) or a Chevy 2500(Duramax). I’m looking hard at a used Lance camper….8 1/2 footer to go in the bed.
I found a good deal on a 2007 Dodge 3500 diesel dually regular cab. Brand new on the lot and discounted because the regular cab ain’t selling. It’s what I want except it has the lower-geared rear end housing.
I drove over to the Chevy dealer on Sunday. they have so many trucks on the lot, you hafta back out of the lot if you want to leave. These gas prices are really hurting truck sales or so it seems.
One thing for sure….the diesels ain’t cheap. Most all the dealers are offering 0% financing….just to move them off the lot. Heck….even the Tundras are slow to move. I figure when diesel gets to $4 bucks a gallon, I’ll make my move.

I had my first Fat Tire, courtesy of a fishing buddy after a loooong day of fishing on the Lamar River. I was kicking back on the front porch of the Roosevelt Lodge, in a rocking chair, gazing at the Beartooth Mountains. Man, did that hit the spot.

Lightweight backpacking….now your talking about something I know a little about. I also use the flourescent bulb tubes from the Depot. Just curious……did you weight a regular aluminum tube? The screw on cap is pretty heavy so if you scrap that…..the weight would probably come down considerably.

I went in Moe’s Southwest Grill the other day and the employees on the serving line yell in unison, “WELCOME TO MOE”S!” I think it’s store policy. Maybe the flyshops could adopt this tactic.
While I’m slaving in the cubicle jungle on this Tuesday morning, looking at your photos….your catching trout!
That’s okay though….I’ll reciprocate this summer with some 25″ Kenai rainbows while you’re at work!
Wow guys! There’s a wealth of knowledge and experience here. I guess that’s why I hang out here so much. I’ll take what you all have suggested and spend some time researching and digesting it.

If time is not important….when you head south to FL, hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Staunton VA all the way to Cherokee, NC. Beautiful scenery and a few nice lodges along the way…. Google “Peaks of Otter” for an example. The road typically rides the crest of the Appalachian Mountains all the way. I-81 is off to the west so you can bail at any time if you want to pick up the pace. Slobber over all the trout water you’ll be going by.
Good to hear….that wasn’t intended to be a personal dig on Val Atkinson……just wondering what the “pros” in general thought. I didn’t realize the importance of being a good writer to boost your chances of having photos published……but now that you’ve mentioned it…..a lot of ff articles have the tag line….”photos by author”.
Nice job Zach….and so true! Hopefully you won’t get any nasty emails from the Val Atkinson’s of the flyfishing world

Bob…I admire your sense of humor in a time of adversity. Godspeed dude and I hear that wading a trout stream is a helluva drug!
Zach…brown or blue for me….doesn’t matter as long as it’s not one of those cheesey pre-worn caps that is coming unraveled at the edges.
I have an Etrex Vista with the National Parks East software as well as City Navigator. Like Zach said….Garmins are worthless right out of the box. I saved a bunch of cheese by buying the maps off of Amazon.com. And yes….the National Parks East covers much of the Nantahala and Chattahoochee National Forests.
I driftboated a river a couple of weeks ago that is not in either Nat Forest or Park. The map covered it. I knew where I was the whole time and could gauge our progress to the takeout. The downside is it doesn’t measure river miles and the computer figures the route from put in to takeout via roads or straight line. Neither is useful for river navigation.
I don’t know how I made it this long w/o it.
