InactiveThe wife got me a 1450 Pelican case for my birthday. I thought this was going to be the perfect size for my needs. Then it arrived. It is much larger than I had thought. I was hoping for something a bit smaller.
I will be storing my DSLR, kit lens, 70-300mm lens, a small prime, 3 or 4 filters and a memory cards. Last night I laid out all of this gear on top of the foam to see how much extra room I have. I think I could drop down a size or two to the 1430 or 1400.
For those of you that own Pelican’s, I was wondering how you all lay out your gear in these? How much foam is required in between items to ensure safety and good cushioning?
Any thoughts would be great. I would like to return this ASAP if indeed that is the best option.
Sorry Zach…this may fit better in the Photography forum…wasnt sure.

Steve K.MemberTim,
I have both the 1400 (on the left below) and the 1450 (on the right).
As you can see…they are both pretty full. It sounds like you might need the 1450 since you didn’t mention your battery charger, extra batteries, ballhead, lens cleaning kit, remote release, external flash.
I think you’ll outgrow the 1400 pretty quickly.

MemberTim,
I’m not a big fan of the foam myself, at least not for photography equipment, which I think is designed to be able to handle at least some shock.Feb 7, 2008 at 7:35 pm #22951Carter Simcoe
MemberDrifter, you sure you’re not backwards there?

InactiveTim,
I’m not a big fan of the foam myself, at least not for photography equipment, which I think is designed to be able to handle at least some shock. I think the foam divider sets are a better way to go for this sort of thing. Pelican makes a few for various case sizes and LowePro makes some soft bags designed to drop down in either Pelican cases or their own rip-off versions in the same dimensions. The Omni Sport (1400) or Omni Traveler (1450) are what you would be looking at there. There might be other stuff out there too.If your camera is even a few mm taller than a D40x (and I’d imagine most are) then I’ll warn you that you probably will not be able to get it into a 1400 and still have it close. That was one factor in me picking that up as my first dSLR actually, I knew how much time it would be spending on the kayak and the 1400 seemed like the only case that was going to fit well on the rear deck. I’ve got the Omni Sport deal and I’m happy with it, I keep it stuffed full of shit (extra lenses, flash, filters, batteries, hoods, cleaning stuff, etc.) I’ve been pretty careful to keep this kit as compact as possible from day one though. The digital is actually on its way back from the Nikon service center at the moment or I’d snap you a pic, it should be back on Monday though so if you still want one let me know then.
If you decide to stick with the foam it has been my experience that you need to keep at least two of rows of the perforated sections intact if you don’t want them to quickly tear through the first couple of times you put things in and pull them back out.
This is why you get paid the big bucks!

MemberThe frustrating thing is that these cases cannot be found in stores to allow for inspection before purchase.
Yeah, but at least they aren’t slapped together in China with slave labor just so they can meet the pricepoint that Wal*Fart demands.

Steve K.MemberCarter,
That photo is deceiving ’cause I used the wide angle end of the zoom to snap the picture. The camera body (D70s) is in the 1400…..and it is a tight fit. I have to position my camera strap (it’s an Optech neopreme one…not the one shown in the photo) so the case will close properly. It’s been through some rough shit but my camera is holding up. It’s bounced around in a trailered driftboat and I even fell on it while hiking in the Beartooths this past summer.
