Steve K.MemberCan anyone offer a more economical way to carry a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens and body other than the Kirk setup ( $130 or so)? I want to wear it over the shoulder for some moderate hiking….like in this photo:

I have a nice Optech camera strap that attaches to the camera body……but there seems to be a lot of weight on the body.Any tips appreciated.

MemberDrifter, I’ve lugged by 80-200 AFS 2.8 on the body for years (it’s about 2x the weight of the 70-200VR), it won’t hurt the mount but if you really want to be sure, look to one of the zoom packs by Tamrac, Tenba or others. These packs are padded and hold your camera with lens attached. They make them big enough for the 70-200. For larger lenses, 300-400mm 2.8’s I’ve always used a dedicated strap on the lens, but it’s not worth getting all tangled up for a little zoom

John BennettMemberThat guys lugging my dream lens.
/sighDrifter, while Nikon mounts arent as strong as Canon Ive yet to hear of anyone whos damaged a mount Nikon or Canon due to the heavier lenses. What I have heard of is various devices failing to take the weight of the lens and body. Some have broken, some have come loose and released. End result is lens and body go crashing to the ground. Id never, ever trust my lens (especially a 500 f4) to something like that.
Lens to body, strap to body, strap around the neck.
If it ever fails I go after Canon.I shoot with guys who lug and handhold the 500 f4, 300 f2.8s and even the Sigmonster mounted on a tripod ( 300-800) and all universally rely solely on the body strap and nothing else
***************If your looking for a bag to stow it in while walking around there are dozens that can take a body + 70-200 and little else. The better ones are Kinesis and Think Tank.
One guy I shoot with has Kenises bag for the 500 f4 + body. Its much like a tube he can wear on his back like a back pack. That guy in your photo will have one hell of a sore neck if he does that for any period of time (2hrs+)

MemberWish there was an option for my 80-200mm 1:2.8, but it has no mount on it….so I just lug the heavy little guy around.

MemberThis may be a really dumb question, but I don’t have a clue what is on the end of that lens?

MemberLowpro makes a toploader AW that’s all weather and will fit a 80-200 or 70-200 with body attached.. you can attach components to the outside of the case, I frequently carry the body with the “money maker” a 28-80 2.8 in a side pocket, as well as the G9 on the other side and a SB600 in the front.
