Nice job John! I hope to be shooting (with the Nikon) opening day of dove season in a couple of weeks. I’d be interested in any tips.
What lens did you shoot with the most? I’m thinking 70-200mm or something similar.

For those that have never been….Deep Creek is 4-weight water. Her’s a photo from 10/20/06.
…and for the photogs in the bunch, there are at least three waterfalls within a half mile of the campground. Zach/Lauren…it’s still a little early for me to commit on staying at the campground but I’ll at least stop by Friday or Saturday evening to say “Hello” and share a few fish stories.

First thing I noticed was the water levels. It’s good to see high water in August for a change!

Solid report Andrew! One of my favorite things about going to AK is flying in the Beavers. I love that first photo…especially with the low ceiling and rain on the windshield. That is the Beavers element. I can hear the drone of the engine and feel the plane bouncing around in that photo.

I plan to be in GSMNP for a few days in October. I will see if I can coordinate the trip to include that weekend. It should be fun.
Ten-Four on Cataloochee. Beautiful place with a mix of big and small water. Lot’s of photo ops as well with restored buildings and of course the elk.
I’m not sure about lodging options other than the campground…..which is where I stayed. Basic amenities…no hot showers as I recall. There is a long drive (about 10 miles if I remember correctly) on a decent gravel road to get there. I mention that in case someone wants to stay in a hotel/cabin in Maggie Valley.

There’s a campground near Fontana Village….don’t recall the name.
Also Fontana Village has hotel-type lodge and cabins.http://www.fontanavillage.com/accommodations/accommodations.htm
The dates mentioned will be prime “leaf peeper” season….meaning traffic and “No Vacancy” signs. The cabin/lodge prices drop by as much as 50% beginning Nov 1st.
If you’re suggesting backpacking….I’m down with it.
We could meet at Fontana Marina and take the pontoon boat to Eagle or Hazel Creek and hike upstream a few miles. I think Zach mentioned something similar.
Zach….I would also recommend the Smith House in Dahlonega…on the square for a nice country-style meal. I’d also suggest you try the Blood Mountain hike in winter when there is snow on the mountain. My wife and I did it and the scenery is breathtaking.
I chose Nikon and really love my camera and lenses. Howeva…… If I knew I would enjoy wildlife photography as much as I do…..I probably would have opted for Canon. Their telephoto lenses seem to be less costly than comparable Nikon lenses.

I go to Yellerstone every summer for a little backpacking and flyfishing. I usually get my best deals in March and April for an August trip. Try http://www.sidestep.com . If you can get to Bozeman, West Yell, Cody, Billings, Jackson or Idaho Falls for less than $300….jump on it.
Make sure you check rental car prices before booking. Cars seem to be cheapest out of Billings and more expensive in West and Jackson.
