Tim….do not dispair. I have two boys and have a career in law enforcement. So you know I’m not rolling in cheese by any means. I typically do one big trip each summer. This time Alaska. Start saving now for next year’s trip. I pride myself in finding the cheapest way to do it. I’ve done ten days in Yellowstone for $900. How? Take the backpack and live in the backcountry. No hotel and restaurant bills and the rental car stays parked at the trailhead. Car rental can be split between 2 to 4 adults. Airfare is the big ticket item but can usually be had fairly cheap if you shop around and purchase in March or April.
Alaska is a little different…..much more expensive.

I think you are on to something with number 4 and 5. That is an excellent way to capture a portrait of friends and family. Beats the heck out of a muslin (sp?) background any day.

Thanks guys. I’m glad to report that everyone emerged unscathed. As long as you didn’t look and smell like a sockeye salmon, you were okay. We did have to vacate our fishing hole on several occasions….especially for a bear that we dubbed Pyscho Bear. That’s him in photo number seven with my son in the foreground. Pyscho Bear had a nasty habit of hiding in the grass, only to come bounding at you when you hung a fish. The splashing of the fish seemed to really excite him. He would bust through the run with his head underwater, looking for the fish on the end of your line. Of course by then, we would have intentionally broken the fish off. Light tippet was a must when fishing around Psycho Bear.
Extreme Alaskan flyfishing at it’s finest! 🙂 Be sure to add this place to your bucket list.
I’m with Andrew on this one. I can’t figure out the Renzetti haters.
I’ve had a Renzetti for a loooong time with no issues. Am I missing something as well? I’ll buy another brand tomorrow if it will improve my skills.

I had heard about Dusty from a friend of a friend. Not only because she’s easy on the eyes….but knows the Kenai like the back of her hand. I was in Cooper Landing in ’06 and walked in Troutfitters looking to book a trip on the Kenai. Counter doode says he can hook me up. I tell him that I don’t ask for much but in this case I wanted to book a trip with Dusty. Turns out she was booked solid for the whole week I’m there while the other guides were begging for work. ;D

I just checked my bead box and I’m using size 10 (not 12) hooks…..TMC 105 but I’m sure any scud hook would probably suffice.
I’ve never used fluoro. One thing I’ve been told….and it seems to be true to a degree…Alaskan rainbows are not nearly as leader shy as the fish in the lower 48. I typically use 3X and 4X tippet for trout in AK.

I use a Tiemco hook….the same one you use to tie egg patterns….or scuds. Size 12. I have them downstairs in the Man Cave and will get the model number for you if someone doesn’t chime in soon.

Be forewarned…..you may need to “match the bead” just like you match the hatch. No matter how many beads you take with you….you never seem to have the right size and color that the fish are keying on. I have a basic selection simply because I do a lot of wilderness fishing and flyshops are not an option. The beauty of buying beads on location is the ability to get the “hot bead” and maybe a little additional info regarding the area.
I’ve never used McFly Foam but have used the glo bug yarn….I concur with what’s been mentioned…..sharp scissors and tight wraps.
I ordered a glue gun and some sticks from The Fly Shop in Redding CA and that is the ticket for glueing the egg to the hook shank when tying ESLs. I even tied some nasty looking Regurgitaing ESLs.
The oversized egg that Zach mentions is sometimes referred to in AK as a Fat Freddie. Check out the message board at http://www.alaskaflyfish.net for some tips on painting beads and tying glo bugs.
Just a word of note…..the regs regarding pegged bead usage is somewhat difficult to understand….depending on what stream you are on…..when fishing in AK.
