Jim LamprosMemberHey guys,
Haven’t posted in a while but read everyday and enjoy all your comments.
I’m lucky enough to be within a short drive of the Henry’s Fork this summer. This river has just started to pop and let me tell you, it is a sight to see.
I fished the last two evenings in multihatch situations. When I say multihatch, I mean 3-4 different mayflies, more types of caddis than I could count, and blanket midge hatches. I managed some fish, and some big fish at that, but most came on nymphs. I found the dry fly fishing to be extremely difficult.
My question is, how do you all nail down what the fish are keyed in on in a situation like this? I watched some guys across the river from me consistently sticking fish on top, so my hunch is that they WERE keyed in on something. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Try changing your approach when casting at the fish.

This answer reminds me of the famous quote.
“give the boy a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the boy to fish, he eats for his life”
The grey drake tip will be great for Jim in the next few days but what about the rest of his summer?
Jim…I couldnt even begin to answer your question…I’m stuck fishing for 10″ Northeastern trout the rest of my life.

The Itinerant AnglerI don’t have a lot of dry fly experience (Arkansas has few hatches and the ones in the Smokies aren’t usually multi-hatch situations).

Reminds me of a story I heard from another fisherman (if a fly fisher told it, it has to be true, right?).
This fellow was catching a lot of fish.

Well, the pmd hatches should be starting on the Teton around 11:00, if you can’t make that, hit the Hank in the evening…….Chester has an amazing spinner fall.

If you got a boat, the big bugs will be on the SF any day, along with pmd’s, drakes, and yellow sallies, and if you are bored, take a royal trude and some bear spray and wander up Robison Creek.
You all are so spoiled.

CDC.When I fished the Ranch and late evenings at Wood Road 16 ;), lower profile, emerger type CDC flies could work wonders. I also tied cripples and found great success when my higher profile hackled and/or hair dries were getting refusals.
Take samples home, get creative, and use long leaders and Frog’s Fanny and see what happens. Also, might want to pick the brains of some of the guys at Mike Lawson’s shop or Renee Harrop’s place. Plenty of books on those waters as well.
Good days on those waters will get you plenty of fights into your backing and moments you won’t forget.Travis

Jim LamprosMemberFellas,
Appreciate the insights. All were useful and I had much better success up top tonight. The Hank is really something and those of you who haven’t fished it ought to soon.
Lando, didnt you say something about salmon flies on the SF? Don’t know where you got that idea. All I saw were these big caddis…
