MemberSpent last three days camping in and around the Sawtooths. A buddy picked me up Friday night from the airport around midnight. Driving straight to the mountains, stopping around 230AM at Warm Springs to sleep. Took a left down a dirt road paralleling Bench Creek, two miles in, pulled out our bags and threw down in the dirt for a couple hours. Light came quickly, we headed to the Frank Church Wilderness Area. Beautiful, remote and not crowded, we hiked a cliff side path following the river downstream a couple miles looking, from above, down into the water. Caught a bunch of twelve to fourteen inch Cutts and a tiny Bull Trout. Day two, we mastered the White fish over by Stanley while fishing the South Fork of the Payette, and a couple of its tributaries. Fish all over were eating Spruce Moths like crack addicts in a drug lab. After two days of hiking, fishing, and exploring we stunk bad enough that it was annoying. An executive decision was made to drive into Stanley for a hot shower, food , and warm bed. We stayed at a little B&B on the Salmon River and ate next door at the best Rib Joint in Idaho. The barbeque place has a patio on the Salmon with an unrestricted view of the Sawtooths; the best view from a restaurant I’ve ever experienced. On the way out past Lowman we spotted Kokanee while driving a river road home, a funny little miniaturized Coho. Nothing glamorous here, the locals call the fishing technique “Lining”, and if you’ve ever fished Coho’s in Alaska you will know it’s more like guided snagging. No big fish to speak of on this trip, hundreds of miles on the truck and thirty plus on foot. Good food, good times, with a good friend. Most likely could have done this entire trip(if we had stayed camping) for under $200.00 bucks not including plane ticket for me to Boise. There is so much water in this part of the country, it doesn’t seem fair. As we all know, fishing takes you to beautiful places, fishing under the Sawtooths is arguably, one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen.

MemberAaron,
Love that pic of the river with the fog on it – reminds me of a early morning float and that first cup of coffee with the cold morning air.
