    I should make it

Supposed to go to a wedding in Mexico that weekend, but the $850 ticket is not looking to good right now

For out-of-staters, where is the best place to fly into?

    Dusty –

Definitely ATL if you can get a ride up.

And just to confirm, this is a tent outing, as opposed to cabins. Just trying to get a mental gear list going.
    Thanks,
    Dusty

Definitely tents, but Bryson City is close by if people are unable to bring the gear or have no desire to camp.

Right now a definite possible maybe, for the reasons we have discussed.

I am going to try and make it, but there is an outside chance that I will have to be out of town that weekend. If I can make it, I can certainly drive a few as well.

    Hey this isn’t fair!
    I live in Europe so it’s a bit too far away….  🙁

    Sounds like great fun.

I plan to be in GSMNP for a few days in October. I will see if I can coordinate the trip to include that weekend. It should be fun.

Doubt i will be able to make it due to prior commitments but those who go are in for a treat! Deep creek is my favorite stream in the smokies and hopefully by that time the browns will be out and about spawning. I was there backpackign last year at the brysons place campsite during spawning season and we saw plenty of monster fish. Don’t be afraid to go up high for specs!

    That is very encouraging, Mtnman.

Just out of curriosity, if you had to pick 3 fly patterns for this trip, what would they be.  I don’t think my 2/0 decievers would be much use.  My freshwater flybox is pretty much limited to dry flies and terrestrials, so I would need to start stocking up.

Smokies at that time of year?

As far as rods go, 4 weights will be a good compromise.

My go to fly for the smokies during the fall is a stimulator and/or a large rubber legged prince nymph. These flies are large enough to net a big brown’s attention but will still catch plenty of fish.

Like zach said, most smokies fish will be under 10″ so a 4wt should be fine. A 9′ rod will definitely give you an advantage to reach out to the fish as well as let you do the ol’ smoky high stickin’ technique……absolutely deadly. Deep creek is unique in the fact that it is the only stream in the park that is predominantly brown trout so hooking a large one is a possibility. You can catch browns all the way up past the left fork of deep creek, so you will have to hike a way to get into brook trout territory.

Zach, there are some true monsters in deep creek. We counted no less than 12 fish that appeared to be at least 24″ that trip and a few that were as long as your arm. There is a chance to hook an absolute line screamer on your trip, i just hope the water levels improve.
