I think that pretty much settles where we’re headed.

Bob, one of the “classic” dry flies for the GSMNP is the Thunderhead.  There is also a Thunderhead nymph http://www.smokymountainflyguide.com/images/nymph_2/Thunderhead%20nymph.jpg.  I am going to tie up a bunch to bring along just for the nostalgia effect.  Otherwise, the patterns mentioned above are great.

Another classic smokies pattern is the yellarhammer. If it doesn’t drop off real cold before the trip, tie one of those on and hang on.

If a new guy can join in, it sounds like a great trip.  I have high interest and a 50% chance of being able to attend.  Christine (my bride) will try to pawn the kids off on her parents so we can make it.   Christine also fishes.

In terms of patterns, consider adding Roger Lowe’s “FLY PATTERN GUIDE to the Great Smokey Mountains” to you library.  I understand that Roger closed his shop but still guides out of Waynesville.  You can probably track him down for an autographed copy without too much trouble.  If you are new to tying (like me), he also sells videos for many of the patterns he provides in the book.  Personally, I find that an elk hair caddis will catch just about any wild mountain trout in NC.

Aaron, Julie is coming so if at all possible make the trip and bring your wife.  BTW, Julie is planning on hiking and taking pictures instead of fishing.

    Aaron,

It’ll be great to have other women who like to fish along!

    LODGING

FYI – it appears that most people are planning on camping on this trip but we found a great deal on cabins by the campground.  We booked one for just $88/night and there are cheaper cabins for about $55/night.  Here is a link below.

    Main site http://www.deepcreekcamping.com/Camping.html

Link to the cabins (only two left as of today so call quickly) http://www.deepcreekcamping.com/Cabins.html

Found this picture of Deep Creek Valley in the GSMN shot in October.  Now I’m getting pretty excited!

Lauren, we are planning on hanging out at the campsite for sure.  I will contact you guys later with list of our cooking equipment (and a list of fine single malts for the menu).

After some quick research, we’ve determined that we can get the group campsite for $35 each night, but we have to have at least seven people committed to reserve the site.

We will commit for a campsite so we can get spots reserved –

    Guys,

As far as payment for the site goes, Zach and I will just go ahead and reserve the site when we hit the seven camper mark, and we can all just settle up when we get to Deep Creek since the rates will depend on how many people use the site.

Sign me up for a spot.  Right now I will be by myself with my own tent.  My son may come with me, but I doubt if Brenda will make it.  She has to work and hates roughing it and fishing.

(and a list of fine single malts for the menu).

Please provide the list to the general IA public so we can see what we’re missing.

Looks like we’re going to have enough people to go ahead and reserve the group campsite.
