Thought long and hard about this one.

Tom McGuane, and if he wasn’t available Yves Chouniard. Chuck Yaeger would be pretty interesting too.

I recently read a piece on Tom Morgan that was “lifted” from Forbes magazine – its a pdf, how do I get it up here?

Here it is on the Forbes web site.

Several others have commented on it here and I agree completely, visiting art galleries is one of the very best things you can do. You can learn all the technical shit, especially if you have a scientific mind, but the creative side is another thing altogether.

Find what you like in an image and try to understand why, the reverse is true as well, be critical, edit ruthlessly but not randomly, study some of the real basics of photography and shoot, shoot, shoot.

There’s nothing we can get good at without practise. ๐Ÿ˜‰

That’s a wonderful pic John. Birds are really special, especially the raptors.

Thanks guys, happy to try and brighten up your winter. When I was in Idaho last year the guys were telling me that where we were standing at that time would be 20 feet under snow in winter and that this huge lake we were near – Cascade I think it was – would be frozen solid. I found that really hard to comprehend.

Dave its great to see Ed taking to fishing……

I didn’t spend a lot of time with Simon in NZed, he had to look after his lad, we had some rain, we only got a couple of days on the water and only one good day. Those first images in that last thread are all Simon but as he’s so good looking here he is again in full front on mode. The scar around the vent of that rainbow is apparently from eels sucking the eggs out of them while they’re on the redds……. don’t even think about what that must be like.

Here’s another from a great angle. Simon had gone north to fish for kingfish at this stage – however he did leave us some directions and phone numbers……..

A small local pastoral stream that teemed with very difficult fish.

Joel the exchange rate is so much in your favor at the moment its insane. The most expensive part of the trip will be the airfare so if at all possible stay longer, the 2 weeks will go way too quickly. They have great camping grounds there with little heated huts that have a couple of beds and not much else – there’s a communal kitchen and of course a bathroom block. You can “do” NZ very cheaply with a small hire car and staying in these camping grounds. I usually rent from Tony at Overland (He’s a fly fisherman and a great guy – http://www.overland.co.nz ).

Best advise I can give is “don’t go” – the rest of your fishing life will be ruined…….. ;D ;D ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜Ž ::)

I always head south from Christchurch, if you go north you can spend too much time driving – its a surprisingly big small place, the roads wind a lot through the mountains and travelling always seems to take more time than you’d planned for. I also don’t bother about the backcountry fishing as I don’t have a need to chase a few big fish, I prefer lots of good fish. You can burn up days in the back country for very few shots, especially that late in the year when many of the fish have been fished over many times and have seen it all.

Late in the season is “fine time” especially down south where Simon lives and fishes. Water levels are low, hatches of small mayflies can be huge, (size 14-18). Bring lots of small dries, emergers, and nymphs. The big rivers should have slowed their flow by then, these usually have some incredible rainbow fishing, bigger flies for these and heavy nymphs. The Waiau river immediately comes to mind.

If it was a really hard core fishing trip I would carry rods from 4-7 weight and lines from floaters to fast sinkers – if you’re into that kind of thing you can get some amazing fish swinging big wets in the big rivers, real line burners. Queenstown is a very touristy place but has some great fishing nearby.

There’s a lot of Kiwis get on the site http://www.sexyloops.com

A good caster can use almost ANY fly line on ANY rod, its simply a matter of adjustment. But most prefer the “ideal” – the line that comes with the Sage bass rods is a very effective combination and about as close to ideal as you can get.

Dave, I think if someone reeaaaally wants an XP they’ll generally buy it from where ever they can get it from.

There was no old stash of blanks and the material to re-make the XP is still available, thats no problem. Most warranty repairs are made to order. Perhaps during the current time they will build up an inventory of blanks and rods.

All kinds of theories brewing on this one.

Cabelas saw an opportunity for an exclusive on an out of production model that they perceive as still being in demand and are prepared to take the risk. I just hope all those guys who have been complaining so long and so loud about the loss of the XP put their money up and support Cabelas on this.

If it means securing work for your valued and trained workforce and gives the company a better balance sheet in what could be a very difficult year ahead you’d be failing in your duty to your owners to not just do it.

On another side if it means staying afloat through the year ahead it means warranties are secure as well. Think of the warranty issues if ANY of the premium rod manufacturers goes belly up. I bet any of the other premium rod companies would give their collective left knackers for the opportunity. ๐Ÿ˜€

By the way, I wouldn’t swap a single ZAxis for a handful of XP’s…………

You need to ask yourself “now what is this stuff made from to make it taste so good, exactly what’s in it??!!”

    Or perhaps you don’t………… ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Anne Rand, John Galt and Atlas Shrugged is a peculiar ideology to fall back on. The flaw in her argument is human greed and stupidity and I think an awfully big slice of that has got us into the situation we currently face.

Heard a really interesting interview on the radio today re the USA and Asia. Asia manufactures and the US consumes, its been the relationship for 30 years now and guess where all your money’s gone. His solution was to turn the whole thing round, get the US back as a major manufacturer, albeit off a smarter base. Its hard to feel sympathy for US motor vehicle manufacturers when they just keep on churning out gas guzzlers at time when the demand has shifted.

Take heart guys, I heard some interesting stats the other day, can’t quote them exactly but out of the top 100 universities in the world 15 were in the US and there are more patent applications in the US each year then the rest of the world combined. Time to roll the sleeves up methinks and stop buying so much foreign crap. ๐Ÿ˜‰
