MemberJust by way of comparison by numbers using Bill Hanneman’s CCS method these two rods (BIIX and ZAxis) are very different.
Taking the 5 weights in both the ZAxis has an ERN of 6.05 and the BIIx is 4.3, the Sage has an AA of 72 and the Winston an AA of 70.
These are vastly different rods.

MemberSounds like a retailer trying to sell a Sage rod to a Winston fan.
Morsie
MemberHow about the first one that was ever made. I believe that should be credited to Don Green, the founder of Sage, some time back in the mid 60’s.
The BIiX led to the Z Axis
Where on earth did you get that idea from?

MemberI use the clinch knot a lot, especially for bonefishing. Most people don’t pull it up properly. You NEVER pull the tag to tighten this knot, only the standing part and it doesn’t need “improving” either. Adjusting the number of turns
Morsie
MemberThat’s exactly what I do as well Zach – put them in a file in order, (starting at 001) open in preview and hit slideshow. You may need to adjust the screen configuration as well. Always carry an adaptor to connect to the projector if you use a Mac.

MemberZach, The Albright knot sucks…….. the one good use for it is connecting monofilament to single strand wire in which case it is the best option by far.
Send me your postal address and I’ll get a copy of my DVD Arbor to Fly to you. It sets out all sorts of connections (especially using gsp backing) following the line from the arbor connection right through to the fly.

MemberSimon I’ll be across in late January early Feb. Bringing Dhanders to hammer the Clutha with Bob, (and Carl as well, I think).
The offer to wear black only extended as far as surviving in Auckland on finals night to cover my Aussie accent.
Morsie
MemberShit, we beat someone 😮 😮
Simon I had to make decision when the flights were happening and am catching a close connection. I think I would probably prefer to wear a black jersey anyway, sounds like its a bit ugly for the Aussies over there.

MemberNow I know how you Kiwis feel losing to the French……. that friggin hurt. I did predict an ambush, it was the game the Irish had to win to avoid SA in the quarters and NZed in the semis.
Lets see how it rolls now.
Simon I’ll be passing through Auckland on the night of the final on my way back from Aitutaki. I doubt I’ll be wearing a Wallabies jersey, think I’ll be bunging on a Kiwi accent.

MemberYou know how Americans are when it comes to sports if we didn’t create it or pervert it so far away from the original game that you can no longer recognize it it just doesn’t matter. I think this goes double for any sport popular in the realm of the former British Empire

MemberBash the living snot out of each other is more like it – then drink beer together.
I once heard a US football commentator ask “How come more people aren’t killed playing this game”?
Great to see the US being so competitive in a world game. It would be absolutely fantastic for the game if the US and Canada were to get their shit together and expand this great game. As the T shirt says, “No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls”.
No tightening of the larynx yet Simon?
(That comment, for those who don’t understand, is a reference to the New Zealand All Blacks, usually the best team in the world at this game

MemberZach I agree with you on the ONE’s, these are just straight out fishing rods in the normal fishing range and that’s good to see. Sage seem to have gone down this path over the last few releases, I think the VXP is also very much a straight up fishing rod. I suspect that the “Technical casting rod style will be restricted entirely to the TC range. The Zaxis the ONE replaced was still not bad on the long stuff. The 5 weight ONE is very sweet.
I don’t usually comment negatively on products but I had my hands on a BVK reel a couple of weeks ago. The retailer whose store I was in said it was going to sell for $300 here in Oz. It felt to me like a typical Chinese made crap reel that wholesales out of that country for less than $20 – it was very poorly finished with sharp edges all over the place. I don’t know about the internal workings but I would be very suspicious……

MemberNice to see the Sage ONE’s win best new rod in both fresh and saltwater. I’ve had a 5 and a 6 for a few weeks but haven’t had a lot of opportunity to play with them as I’ve been travelling and teaching casting. I’ve had these two rods at all the shows I’ve been doing and a lot of people have been able to have a cast with them. In the process of doing these shows I have of course had my hands on a very wide range of other rods from many different makers. Yesterday, late in the day I got to go back to the ONE’s, especially the 5 and the WOW factor was very very high. 🙂

MemberI went fishing today (mid winter here) and had to sort my way through probably 30 boxes of bass and trout flies (this is not counting my saltwater flies) to find the flies I wanted and there’s easily 3,000 all together. You’re just not old enough to have built up enough of a stash Zach. The age of the average fly fisherman is probably in his 40’s so you have a few more years to get together a respectable number.

MemberNice Tim, I’ll be there in October and am really looking forward to it.

MemberMichael that was the very first rod I ordered for myself!!!
It’ll be a sad day for mankind when all R&D stops. That’s the day when we begin to go backwards. Even the bamboo rod makers are striving for new and better techniques and designs. I thought my 5D was the bee’s knees and the duck’s guts, until the 7D came along. My old Nokia is such a piece of shit next to an iphone………. and so on it goes.
The SLT 5 is a complete and utter anomaly.

MemberThe ONE rods just won best new fly rod of the year at the big European fishing tackle show.
There’s another new offering that I find mighty interesting, a series of European style nymph rods – 10 footers -#2 – #5 weights made with the same technology as the ONE.
The bass rods a have also received an overhaul, new lighter blanks and better fittings (bright red reel seats) and there’s a new model – the Peacock which is effectively a 7’11” 12 weight. Its a monster and for me it was love at first cast. I spent a couple of weeks abusing one of them on hordes of trevally and big mackerel. Can’t wait to fish it on our Murray cod and up in the Amazon next year.

MemberJust get in the water Mike – get some down low pics, should be enough shallow water for you to get out of the boat. Are you fishing one up, that’s always a bummer for a photographer……….

MemberThanks Loren, Just the basic 70-200 on a Canon 7D. Shutter priority and auto ISO. Love that auto ISO function. Even at 1650 its still often not fast enough to freeze them but some movement to denote action is in my view passable. It also helps having such a predictable fish.
I would definitely like a second 7D, one for wide one for long and that’s in my plans. the 7D will probably be superseded
