MemberSo how did the Beaverkill fare in the Irene disaster? I’ve heard some of the tribs, (Willowemock) had a lot of damage by Irene and more so by the excavators with operators who think rivers should resemble ditches.

MemberLots of them on eBay, from cheap to exorbitant.

MemberThey roll cast fine, just like the regular TT lines, they’re just stiffer and have a shorter head.
Jon Conner
MemberI would recommend these lines highly, they cast really well, are good in the wind, do NOT tend to tangle, and, they handle well through a wide range of temperatures. I’ve been using them pretty much exclusively for my SW fishing for six or seven years and the clear intermediate tip is what I use most for striper fishing, (I’m a wade fisherman, so getting very deep is not my thing). The floater is a good line too, I use it on my six weight for small estuary type stuff and have also used the floaters for bone fishing. All the BTT lines run heavy compared to AFTMA weights, but I think just about all SW lines do.

MemberGreen River?

MemberCurrent price is $45, turnaround varies according to whether they have sections on the shelf, with older models sometimes they have to make a run of sections, that takes longer. Unfortunately I have had to make use of their repair service a couple of times in the last year and a half.

MemberInteresting article in the new Fly Fisherman, a comparison test of different mono and flouro for break strength, knot strength etc., certainly surprised me in that there seems to be very little objective difference between the two materials when averaged out.

MemberRe Charlie and Vince, I just think that their experiment is

MemberFor stripers I use a 9.5′ for 8wt most of the time and rarely go to a 10wt, and quite often a six, I do not fish the surf much, but I used to, and I used an 8wt then also. The line Ive settled on is a TT with an intermediate tip.

MemberA long time ago, Charlie Fox and Vince Marinaro did an experiment which was chronicled in Fox’s book Wonderful World of Trout. Japanese beetles were dropping into the water and the fish were keyed, so Fox and Marinaro started dropping beetles in the water from a bridge to get the fish eating , then they strung pieces of mono through the beetles to see
what would happen, the fish continued to take even with coarse butt material stuck through the beetle. The conclusion, as long as the drift is natural, the fish don’t care about stuff sticking out of the bug.
That said, flouro sinks better and is stronger and more abrasion resistant, and if you can buy expired stuff (which I do at Orvis for 1/2 price) it’s great for the salt and for nymphing. Mono is more flexible and still cheaper.

MemberNow we are talking primarily about breathability, which has a lot to do with comfort and warmth, if your sweat doesn’t transport you will be cold, or hot and wet or just clammy. Everything I have read in the past said that Gore Tex transports more moisture by far than the competitors.
I have just replaced my second pair of Simms Guides with a pair of Patagonias, so I guess I’ll find out empirically the difference. I will say that Patagonia’s new suspender system is miles ahead, you can just drop the front down to your waist with a couple of clips for walking, then slide them back up when you need them.
JCJon Conner
MemberI guess the actual dilemma that manufacturers like Simms have to face is how to survive over the long term, and selling direct doubles their gross receipt on a pair of waders, which probably triples the profit. With the way things are going and more and more business being conducted online, they are really competing more with other online marketers of their own product than they are with the local shop. I think if I were in their position I would make

MemberI’m sure it has more to do with the fact that they have no eyelids and they’re trying to not be totally blinded by the light.
Or they just want to avoid being wrapped up like a dace, another runner in the night…
Those are really the words, I could never figure them out.

MemberOn the subject of your motor bouncing around, a support for the bottom unit will keep the motor from constantly flexing the transom and eventually breaking something.
JCJon Conner
MemberWell, I think we can all agree that a live ashamed fish is better than a dead one that’s not.
JCJon Conner
MemberNot from personal experience, but I know that the Panasonic DMC GH2 is considered about the best there is for video and can be enhanced further with a hack firmware upgrade. If you go to Midcurrent and look up Surf and Inshore 2011 video by Peter Laurelli you will see what can be done with this camera.

MemberI’m a little out of date, but I use what Smith called their “all hour brown” which is a low density photochromatic brown color lens, I like them, next one will have to be different, probably amber, but I’ve been using Smith photochromatics forever and wouldn’t use any constant density lens if I had a choice.
JCJon Conner
MemberI think they’re just ashamed.

MemberPhotogene is another good one, it retains full image size and the data, will also resize for email etc.

MemberPanasonic Lumix DMC ZS15, sounds like a great camera, I have other Panasonics, but this one has a big zoom range, .3 seconds between shots, and under $300 street price.
