I’ll have to give a big second to Lyle Lovett and also raise you Robert Earl Keen Jr.

in reply to: Wading Boots #32719

I’ve had a pair of L.L. Bean Rivertread II wading boots in the studded Aquastealth version for 4+ years now, and I love them.  They are solid footed as a goat.  My streams are limestone bottomed with anywhere from solid rock, to gravel, to mudy and they do great.  Some limestone sections can be super smoothe and slick with algae film, and the carbide studs just cut right through to the rock.  Solid traction.

You still have to be careful when wading freestone streams such as Colorado’s Eagle River, where the streambed is made of boulders the consistency of greased bowling balls, but again, I like the carbide studs which really help cut into the rock for traction.

So far, I have just had to replace the laces.

And the cleanup is so sweet….just hose them off and you’re done.

    Enjoyed the picture John.

Beuatiful pics Morsie and David.  I am still drooling.  Man the scenery is stunning! And the fish aren’t bad either 😀

Please post more pics from down under!

The trout fishing here in Central Texas is in prime season and the weather has been beautiful, but no pics or fishing for me for two more weeks at least.  I’m a little over one week in on my recovery from gall bladder removal surgery.  No sports, fishing, or heavy lifting :P.

I got called in to the E.R. just as I was walking in to Bass Pro Shop, aagghh.  That is pretty much my tradition for any holiday.

    Happy New Year everyone.

Well, Neal, that was my story too….Except I was supposed to be going fishing instead of Bass pro, and I was on the receiving end of the knife :'(

I too just finished The River Why.  I really enjoyed it.  It was different than I expected, but I never found it to be dull reading.  It is definitely a book to reflect on during the read and even afterward….kind of leaves you evaluating all the things you believe in and why.  Some times I wished his way of thinking was a little more nailed down, but I really liked how he brought it all together in the end.  The last two chapters were worth the wait.

Next, I am starting Pale Morning Done, since so many folks have recommended it.

    Phil,

Like everyone else, I was really sorry to hear this news.

in reply to: Texas Hill Country Buck #65929

The buck I posted pictures of is probably a 5 year old deer.  This is the third fall I have seen him, and he had big antlers back then.  He has the sway back, “cow hips”, pot belly, and Roman nose of a mature deer, but the bodies do not tend to get as big as northern deer here in Central Texas (I suspect this due to the fact that it is mostly scrubby ranchland, not farms with bean/cornfields or lush forest, etc.) He looks a lot more sleek and fat this year….last winter he was looking scrawny and old and I was wondering if I would see him again this year. On some managed hunting ranches in South Texas they do get large bodies, but they have all the food and protein they need there.

CORRECTION:  Actually, I was just looking over the photo from last year vs. this year, and it may not be the same deer (as far as I know, kickers don’t move around drasticaly from year to year, right?)….very close and definitely the same genes, but there also appear to be other differences in the way the tines are structured.  Both have the crab pincer on the front left antler as you look at the deer, but the little kicker on right G2 is different.

On the buck from last year, there is a kicker on the top of the right G2, but on the pictures I posted above from this year (and others I did not post), that kicker is not there.  Instead, it has a small kicker pointing backwards at the base of the G2 and main beam (which you can’t see in the photos I posted above).  Whether it is the same deer or not, this year’s deer appears to be about 5 1/2 – 6 1/2?

    Last year:

    This year:

If you don’t find yourself tapping your feet at UDMD’s you aint got no rhythm man.

    Well said! ;D

Next time I am there, I want to hit the Caney again…

    Hey Mike,

My wife and I went to Uncle Dave Macon Days the year before last, and are hoping to make it again soon.  My cousin Gloria Christy and her husband Tom are the President and ministry fair oragnizers of UDMD respectively.  Maybe we should have an IA enclave in Murfreesboro this summer…

UDMD is very cool.  Set in an old historical civil war town called Cannonsburgh, you can walk around and just walk up to a group of folks pickin’ and grinin’.  The folks that are seriously into clogging walk up with their clogging shoes and 3’x3′ peice of plywood with handle, and throw it down and just go to town cloggin’.  It’s quite a cool atmosphere.

Concerning the podcast Zach, I started listening to it in the truck this morning…got through the first two songs.  I can already say this is one of my favorite podcasts.  When I first stumbled upon the Itinerant Angler, the music was one of the main things that hooked me.  It was like being home again.  Great job promoting all these artists Zach.  My CD collection is growing rapidly ;D  Absolutely love the music you showcase on the podcasts.

    Wes –

I was using my 75-300mm f/4 – 5.6, which on my 1.6x crop sensor body makes it more like a 120mm – 480mm.  These pictures were all at 480mm and f5.6, ISO 200.  Anyway, I was hiding behind a brick column on the back porch of the house, and using the column as a tripod to steady the lens.  I’m going to have to guess that it was around 20 – 25 yards away.  There is another huge 8 point that has thick antlers that I am waiting to see again.  In the spring, it is fun to hunt for thier sheds.  I found the left shed of the buck pictured last spring.  He is a 10 point, although you may not be able to see it due to the angles in some of the pictures.

The buck you jumped in the field is really nice….nice mass in his antlers and looks like a 12 point?!  The buck at the feeder is nice too.
