Great photos Scot! I like the way you’ve made the flies look like they are your little buddies in the pictures!
Where are you fishing at? With all those leaves it looks like fall where ever you are at.

Hey guys –
James Buice was nice enough to give me a little stick time in his brand new 16′ Outcast raft (this thing is their Cadillac model and weighs a freaking ton. We had to disassemble it to haul it out).
A Cadillac model in a raft would be a light one in my opinion. 😉 Especially if you are having to tear it down and haul it out!
Really cool; the strokes aren’t much different than in my one-man pontoon, but everything required much more force. The hardest thing I had to deal with was keeping the oars at their balance point in the oar-locks. James is a few inches shorter than me, and he likes to keep his oars sort of balanced on the edge of the sleeve thing on them, rather than let them ride on the lock-stopping thing (don’t you love my sophisticated terminology?)
A good way for a beginner to start out is to put oar rights on the oars. This helps keep the oars in place for you and is a great way to start the whole memory thing. I did this for my wife and she is a pretty good oarsman now.
This really made me jones for some more rowing. For those of you who own drift boats – do you get as big a kick out of navigating the boat as you do fishing yourself? I’m happy to say James landed a rainbow on a dry while I was at the sticks.Zach
I like being behind the sticks unless the wind is blowing. Around here it seems to ALWAYS be in your face and that can make for a really challenging day! Zach anytime you want to row a raft I have a really sweet Sotar that I would be happy to let you row! And I promise not to hook you if you are a good ducker! 🙂
JoelThanks for the link Carter! That has actually given me an idea that might just work out very well for me. I am thinking about getting a sheet of Marine grade plywood and placing it where the seat is now. Somehow rig it up so that I can put my rowers seat on top and make it so I can adjust it and then make two cut outs that these little cooler / dry boxes can slide down into on both sides of me. Then fasten a little foam to the top of the boxes so I can stick used bugs in them and I think I am in business!
I will be working on this in the next month and when I get done I will post pictures.

I know Joel, guiding is a tough business and most of the rods were probably brought to the pawn shops just to make ends meet.

What a steal Dave! I have a buddy out of Billings who told me to always check the pawn shops in Montana for old fly rods. He said lots of guides get into a bind and sell their rods in order to make their drug…err I mean rent money. 😉
That is a little harsh Tim. I can only think of one stoner guide that I know of. Maybe eastern Montana is different but I think the guys that guide around here are just guys working hard to make ends meet. I think a lot of these guys have had a real tough go of it since the 2000 season when things started to dry up and burn. Every year since then there have been restrictions and river closures which is never good when your a guide. That is more likely the reason they would have to sell off some of their gear. I seriously doubt it is drugs.

Patrick when I was your age I did just that. Now that I am a little older that rowers seat with a small back on it feels pretty good after ten hours on the river.
George I looked at the seat you mentioned. Nice seat and I see what you are saying about putting a cooler underneath it but I am really looking for more of the all in one type deal.

This one and about 50 more just like it or bigger were caught on Blue Wings this past fall on the Horn. Look close and you can see them floating by in the picture.

Nothing beats it Rich! Nothing I love more than a winter evening up there in front of a hot burning campfire, listening to the fire crackle as the lake begins to rumble as the night time temperatures began to drop. Good times…Good times.

Carter I am not sure Zach knows what these mutants you speak of look like. Do you know if anyone has ever captured them on film? Or are they like the elusive Yeti who are rarely caught on film?
Sounds like a great find Dave. Curious as to why you wasted your time in the barrow pit when you have the mighty MO right there?
Have you ever tried to over line your z-axis? Give it a try and I think you will be surprized!

Jim I could put a soft sided cooler inside the dry box and that work fine. If I was the one creating this thing though I would have a seat in the middle and a door hatch on the cooler side so that it could be accessed easily while one was rowing down the river.

David my favorite podcasts are found right here on the itinerant angler. They are the only ones I seem to have time to listen too and I barely have time for that! My all time favorite has to be the one with Peter Morse. Morsie lives the dream and the stories and pictures he posted along with the one on one dialog he gave after the podcast was absolutely amazing in my opinion. If you have not listened too or read his comments afterwards do yourself a favor and down load it now! You will not be disappointed!

These are my two favorite. I have found that the darker color in the parachute really helps you pick your fly out over the naturals.
