I feel the need to defend Taneycomo a bit.  The idea that it is a fishbowl is fairly prevalent.  I live in Kansas City and it is the closest trout water outside the trout parks that is available to me.  It is still a 4 hour drive from my door to the dam.

Taney is heavily stocked, it is also heavily fished.  If you can get past the outlets and away from the dam there are areas that are less crowded and still produce the opportunity to hook into a quality brown or rainbow.  I routinely catch rainbows and browns over 20 inches.  These are not fresh stockers and it requires more skill than catching fish in a barrel.

Taney is a tailwater and does not offer the beautiful, picturesque natural experience that you may find when hiking into a remote mountain stream.  You may get the opportunity to watch a bald eagle land and watch you fish.  There are still opportunities for an amazing experience.

Taney does offer the ability to wade and fish assuming the generation levels cooperate.  Most days will have a window of several hours at least.  While I would generally choose to fish the White below Bull Shoals or the NFOTW, those rivers are not forgiving when it comes to wading access.  I need to spend more time on the Current River but it is very intimidating when it comes to just driving down there and getting a line wet.

I have had a chance to meet Brian Wise although haven’t had a chance to fish with him.

I am in Kansas City, MO.

3 hours to a Missouri trout park, but that is like trying to fish at Wal-Mart.
3.5 hours to Taneycomo which is crowded but a nice tailwater.
4.5 hours to Rim Shoals on the White.
    4.5 hours to Norfork.

Lots of options for Bluegill, bass, and carp close to home but it is a drive to get to clear cold water.

TU Trout Unlimited’s on The Rise
    http://www.outdoorchannel.com/Shows/TroutUnlimitedOnTheRise.aspx
Frank Smethurst has done a great job with this show in his 2nd year. I spoke to him recently and discussed how much I enjoyed his work and what Barrett production has done with it. Just would like to see bigger Trout and can’t wait for his beast brown in the April episode  ***

This is the only show I really enjoy.  Here in Kansas City salt water fishing is the furthest thing from reality.  I have zero interest in those shows and unfortunately they constitute 95% of the programming.

I would really like to see another trout fishing show that spent a little more time on the technical aspects of fishing and less on the people.  I love watching skilled casters, takes, and the process of fishing.  It would be nice to see a bit more instruction and information.  It must be a very difficult balancing act to edit these shows into a 30 minute time slot.

This Flytedeck caught my eye a few months ago but it might be pushing the minimal envelope for me.  This picture is courtesy of their website.

A waist pack makes you a redneck???  That’s new to me.

I thought a “fanny pack” makes you a granny or an 80s throwback.

    hey, I wear one!

It seems that in every group that visits Silver Dollar City there is at least one teal fanny pack.

I’ve heard the Cabela’s Three Forks are decent outfits.  I haven’t cast one myself.  Bean has some decent entry level outfits as well.

This was my beginning outfit as well.

in reply to: What are your favorite cold weather fishing gloves #32186

I wear the Simms gloves as well.

I like these gloves a lot.  The fold over flap has good and bad points.  It makes them much warmed when walking and standing around, but occasionally the mitten flap will reach out and grab my line while stripping.

Although I have chewed for years there is something very special about chewing while I fly fish.

Mountain Hardware makes some of the best gear out there for the price and weight.

It isnt uncommon at Taneycomo to have your fly snatched out of the air at night by a hungry bat.

    Look at it this way…

In the case of a crash you will outlive the people seated in front of you!

I love the site and it reflects Zach’s hard work and devotion to fly fishing.  Managing something like this takes a considerable amount of time and work.  It is great to see it growing and maturing into a real internet destination.

My favorite part of the site is easily the forums.  Forums are typically a mixed bag.  The anonymity that the internet provides tends can bring out some real negative behavior in posters.  These forums do an amazing job of removing that veil and providing some really honest and helpful information.  I know that anything I post will be answered or commented on constructively.  It also helps to know that many of the posters are true experts in the sport and at the same time are so accessible.  It is a true gem.

Of course your mileage may vary if you are a huge fan of Orvis or private land ownership…. 😉

Got my hat and I love it.  Too bad it is too small for me to wear.  It looks good on my wife at least 🙂

Any chance of ordering another batch of larger profile hats?

in reply to: Pictures of Dogs Fishing #25958

Not exactly fishing but Izzie was very interested in the large rainbows in the cave area of Roaring River State Park here in Missouri.
