As a family we are heading out west next summer for a month of camping, hiking and fishing.

Suggest you sign her up for casting lessons from a professional.

i have a 9′ 5wt orvis silver label that my wife uses when we go out.
the length and weight are a good balance, it has enough flex to keep her entertained with smaller fish and allow ease of casting from a canoe.

I bought my wife one of the TFO casting for recovery rods.

I second the casting lessons + letting her choose.  It can be frustrating to learn to cast from a spouse.   😉

FWIW, I have a 5wt 9′ St. Croix Legend Ultra with the smaller grip, which fits my hand really well.

since you mentioned grips, the joan wulff winston series has a smaller grip and a thumb depression for the ladies-price is a little high for a starter rod for a single trip

you can sand down the cork to fit smaller hands, though i would not attempt this unless you know

I also agree with the casting lessons and letting her chose her own rod. Nancy now has three, only one of which I bought her. Mind you, I have bought her a few more over the years as gifts. Unfortunately or fortunately, I now use these or they are sitting on the rack. Truth be told, most of the rods she currently uses are ones I have bought for myself, she tried them and I have yet to fish them again. I keep telling myself that’s a good thing.

    Lauren,

Zach told me that it was tough taking instruction from you!

I had the opportunity to be involved in a rod review recently. The TFO rods (three of them) scored very highly with all anglers present on the day, who came from a wide variety of backgrounds (salt & fresh). I was surprised by how much I enjoyed casting them.

    Ben,

The TFO CFR rods are basically the Professional series rod with a different finish.

A dozen years ago, I took my wife on her first fly fishing trip, to the San Juan River in Northern New Mexico.
