MemberThis is a good topic to start because I know that many of us that have been fishing for a while do not really know how to answer the question. I also know that there are many folks in fly shops that still cannot answer this “should be” simple question. A friend asked me this question yesterday.
What is a good combo setup for a Man and his son that will not break the bank? They want to keep it under a hundred bucks for each setup because they are not sure if they will keep it up past the honeymoon period. This is a really hard question and it also makes me realize why so many people spin fish rather than adventuring into the fly fishing world.

InactiveRedinton has several entry level setups that are a really good value.

Joel ThompsonMemberIf someone asked me that question I would immediately say the TFO NXT package. For around a 175 bucks you get a rod, reel, rod & reel case, fly line, and even a leader. Now I know this is over the $100 price tag that the person wanted to spend but they are going to get a really nice casting rod that comes with a great warranty and all they will have to do after purchase is put the rod together and tie on some flies and they will be ready to go!
It is a no brainer if you ask me.

MemberThose are great recommendations.
Joel,
I just had to laugh after reading your post and not at you but what you said about just tying on a fly and your ready to go. It is a simple statement and true to a degree.Jan 5, 2009 at 3:36 pm #32523Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerI would get a Cortland or Scientific Anglers bubble pack from Wal-Mart or the equivalent.

MemberI received a Cortland combo pack for my 12th birthday (a long time ago).

MemberGo for a cheap set so it won’t hurt there wallet and if they really are going to like it they will soon want something costing more then a 100 bucks.
I started cathing small rouch with a rod and reel i bought from a guy on the dutch version of ebay. In time i learned more of flyfishing and wanted more quallity gear, but still have that cheap ass second hand hanging from the ceiling 🙂

MemberI was thinking about the Cortlands or SA’s but have never tried one out and was looking at the St Croix. Does anyone have experience with the Cabelas Combos?
Chad – I understand the sentiment. I have enough gear in my garage to buy a bass boat and the rod and tackle and pay for the insurance and taxes.

MemberI’ve heard the Cabela’s Three Forks are decent outfits.

Mark SchaferMemberI’m certain that the very nice Walmart associate from the hamster aisle that is covering sporting goods when you get there will be more than happy to devote her smoke break to helping explain the finer points of rod length and line weights to you.

MemberMark, what is the best fly to use when going after those big frogs in a retaining pond?
That would be a great catch, photo and story…

MemberHow old is the son?
Does the Father already fly fish?

MemberThe son is eleven and the dad does not fly fish – this is a new game for them. I’ll be doing a little teaching on this one.

The Itinerant AnglerMark –
In my experience, going into a dedicated fly shop can be a very intimidating experience for a non-initiate.

MemberZach,
I still use my first rod a 6 wt. St.Croix pro graphite and like it for creeks etc and a back up rod. I really, really like my 4 wt. Sage DS2 and use it all the time for trout fishing and it serves me very well. I have never had a problem with it nor do I expect to. It has helped me land some large browns. So no reason to pay $700-800 for a new Zaxis till such time IMO.
Do you still have yours?

The Itinerant AnglerI ran over it and blew it up, alas.
