2012 Toyota 4 Runner 4wd – Very nice on the road, way less of a truck ride than my 2002 (210,00 miles).

George- I assume your statement is tongue in cheek.

They seem to be marketing the, er, aesthetics? of the reel. For a reel in that price range there doesn’t seem to be much information on the mechanics of it.

    Yes, very tongue in cheek.

I almost always leave my oars out and dangling downstream when anchored and it seems to work fine without oar rights…

    Just curious.

Said with so much certainty and confidence.  Where can I find such postings?

Wasnt this originally about Simms going direct?

Yes, and reminiscing about our local fly shop.  I fish Penn’s Creek in PA often, and a group of us were out there a week ago.  The local flyshop owner is Jonas at the Feathered hook.  No financial interest here, just a friendly plug.

We all agreed, fishing out there would not be the same without the local flyshop.  It is a place for great advice, a cup of coffee and to renew friendships.  When your sunglasses take a dump in the river, or it starts raining and your rain gear is 200 miles away the gear you need is just a swipe of the credit card away.  And I never leave the shop without spending at least $20 bucks, but often way more.  Maybe that is why I have 17 jars of Aquel.

But having said that, I spent 20 years of my life in a mom and pop brick and mortar business selling hand and power tools.  The internet, big box stores, manufacturers, lack of sales tax, and fickle customers are the drivers that will really affect the outcome.

But it would be a sad day to lose my favorite stream side fly shop…

    G. Force, Since you aren’t using your name or specifying where you live/fish I can’t comment on your personal situation.

I fish the upper Delaware River with precisely the technique you describe. That’s one I was considering reason I was contemplating or rights. But, since I’ve been (easily) shamed into tradition, I’ll just have to pay more attention to my oars. 😉

A thousand times no on the oar rights.

    This is how I fish.

Just wanted to say hey new to the forum and I’m located in central va
I was wondering whets the best method to start tying, and if there is a starting kit anyone recommends.

    Thanks

    Joe

    Joe-

I would pick a few simple patterns.  This is one of my all time favorite video’s to recommend because you can see a tier make a nymph in 90 seconds.  And this is a fly that does and will catch fish.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD0uIga8-kc

All you need is a hook, copper wire, pheasant tail, some peacock herl, and some thread.  And if you want to get fancy there are many variations on youtube.

There are many simple flies, such as caddis pupae, wooly buggers, etc. that are easy to tie, and only require a few materials.

In the beginning you have so much to learn about thread control, thread tension, not hitting the thread on the point of the hook (trust me, it takes time), and most importantly fly proportion.

So start easy, and if you ask here for good flies for the waters you are fishing you will get many recommendations on simple ties that will not break the bank, but will allow you the unique pleasure of catching a fish on your own flies.

Dave-  I think we can all attest to the quality of scadden produts.  I have seen some of the lesser brands.  I think you have to figure out how and where you will use it.  I started with a Native Ultimate Kayak, then went to the Scadden.  Important to me was fishing standing up.  I can do that, it was iffy on a kayak.  Anchoring.  Very important to me.  Comfort and rigging.  Can’t beat the way you can rig a kayak.  But my Scadden is nicely rigged.
The trailer is my preference.  At the end of a log day I like packing 2-3 items, and going.  On both the kayak and the Scadden I used a trailer.  The Scadden only weighs about 80 pounds.  But it is so darn nice to drag it out of the water and go at the end of a day.  I did the same with my Kayak.
I have only taken mine apart once to store in the winter time.  It stays assembled all the time.
I do wear a PFD almost all of the time.  I fish in very cold tailwaters.  I always have chest waders on when I use it.

Struggling with Pictures.  Here are some of my X5.  I use a trailer.  Pull it out of the water, slide it on, stow some gear, and go!  Very nice at 10pm in the dark!

With the trailer it is very quick to launch, very quick to retrieve.

    David-

I have been using an X-5 for three years.  Mostly on the upper Delaware river system bordering NY and Pennsylvania.  Mostly I am very happy with it, and when I think of how I use mine, I am not sure how a frameless would work.  The Outcast X5 has a comfy seat, you can stand up, and the platform is sufficient for quite a bit of gear.  There is an anchor system that I wish was more robust, but works well.

The way I fish it is mostly to float along, get away from crowds, and look for targets.  Sometimes I anchor and shore fish.  Sometimes I pound the bank with zoo dungeons, pet cougars.  I don’t know, those flies confuse me, but big ugly streamers.

Now my favorite way to fish is to not sit in the seat, but to sit on the platform. With my feet in the water I can kick and swirl my feet enough to control the drift.  Sometimes my feet hit bottom, and I can move slowly down the river while nymphing riffles or casting to the bank.  I have not tried flippers, not wanting to have them on my feet when I get out to wade.  When I am sitting on the lower platform I can jump out right away, with a word of caution, I have been surprised by the depth once or twice.  But sitting on the platform with my legs in the water helps to keep me cool on a warm day.

Typically I bring three rods with me.
