Steve K.MemberJust booked my ATL to ANC flight tonight. The airfares suck this year. I typically get to Anchorage and back for $600 or so. This year….$830 was they best I could do and the itinerary sucks. I’m guessing the cost of jet fuel is the culprit.
For the “itinerant” anglers around here…don’t get sticker shock and good luck.
BTW…..I use http://www.kayak.com as my search tool.

MemberNot so much fuel, the economy in general. They have reduced flights and increased the prices. You pay more and the planes are packed. BR

Colin M.MemberWhen oil costs this much, and refineries close it can be expected.

Phil BrnaMemberIt is getting difficult to find any good prices or times out of Alaska.

Mark SidesMemberSt. Louis to Grand Bahama Island $780. Almost $300 higher than last year.
I hear later this summer the airlines are putting a $3 fee on using the can.Apr 14, 2012 at 12:54 pm #51919
Steve K.MemberThe baggage limits are another bummer. I absolutely hate flying now. There is simply too much hassle in my opinion….from TSA, to boarding the aircraft…to schlepping luggage….but I digress.
To beat the 50 lb per bag restriction…I’m wearing my heavy wading boots on the flight…..might even wear my waders as well. Screw ’em. TSA can fondle my junk all they want. I ain’t paying the extra fee.
Now…deep breath.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Mark SidesMemberTSA has tried to confiscate my reels, which I was trying to carry on, saying I could tie up or strangle someone with my flyline.
A couple years ago they took four boxes of Bone fish flies and said they were going to put them in my check through, a move in which I had zero confidence. While I was protesting the captain/pilot of my flight came by and said he would keep them in the cockpit with him, quality move on his part.
So these days I carry-on my sticks and reels, sometimes they rag about the reels, sometimes not, and check through all the fishing tools, gear and flies…at least that way when I get where I’m going I can still throw a line.

MemberIt has gotten beyond bad. I am to the point where i just drive anywhere that i can possibly get a car to. But Joe…isnt that a time wasting pain in the ass with the high gas prices and all…Yes it is…but f%$k em’…i’ll be damned if they get any more of my money if it can be avoided…and for this northerner…it almost always can.

MemberOne thing I started doing once I found myself wanting to travel more is learning the ins & outs of using mileage plans and such; there’s a bunch of travel bloggers that write about “travel hacking.” It’s not for everybody, but with a little bit of research, reading & whatnot, I managed to accumulate almost 200K frequent flyer miles in the span of 15 months…and I’ve been really half-assed about it (& miss out on a lot of offers due to my Canadian-ness). Some of these hardcore types get 200K or more in the span of 6 months. Google “Chris Guillebeau Travel Hacking” and you’ll get a lot of info.
It’s worth a shot if you’re looking to travel on the cheap; my return flight to Belize from Eastern Canada for this September cost $60 in taxes with points.

Michael PhillippeMemberYou should check the TSA web site for “approved” carry on items. They specifically state that expensive reels should be in your carry on bag.
Prices are outrageous to Montana was well this summer. If you have time and energy, consider flying to Salt Lake City and driving. Besides, rental car deals are available there, whereas a sub-compact will cost you $300 per week in Missoula.

Chad SimcoxMembermy girlfriend and I were going to make a trip up to Alaska this summer. $300RT/ea. out of Long Beach, CA. We would just rent a car and stay with friends. Her old roommate’s husband is a guide, so between him and other friends, we weren’t going to have to bring or rent any gear either. Unfortunately we’re decided this year isn’t the best for us to go. Kinda bummed on that one.
