I guess an Alaskan guide has teamed with Jesse James of West Coast Choppers to offer a fly reel http://jessejamesreels.com/. It looks like the 44 mag 7/8 is $500. I’m kind of curious who the target market is for this reel. For that price, you can get a reel from almost any high end reel maker. I guess machining is machining whether its bike parts or reels, but I could only imagine the grief I would get from my friends if I showed up with a West Coast Choppers reel.
I have see the Jesse James reel pick-up truck driving around town but have never spoken to anyone who has actually used one.
I love how the reels are decorated with spiders and iron crosses and skulls…that will scare the trout into submission…

They seem to be marketing the, er, aesthetics? of the reel. For a reel in that price range there doesn’t seem to be much information on the mechanics of it.

I strongly suspect that reel is being made by a well known supplier in Korea, not hand-forged by Jesse himself.
I spent a fair amount of time fondling one in an AK fly shop. Although I never fished one. I can’t afford to pay for things that look pretty and slick. I go for function over fashion. However, they are very nice reels. And I would love to own one. I know the guide that worked with Jesse on this project and he is in every way the real deal, very accomplished. They are designed as all things Alaskan need to be – tough, beefy, sea worthy, etc.
There is nothing on their website to tell me this is anything other than a paid celebrity endorsement from a a celebrity who had little or nothing to do with fly fishing or the design/development/manufacturing/testing of the reels bearing his name. He did pose for a picture while holding an unstrung rod with an unspooled reel. So, he has seen one at one time and presumably laid hands on the reel itself.
