David AndersonMemberHey guys, does anyone have any experience with the frameless pontoon boats from Dave Scadden ?
I’ve read some fairly mixed reviews on-line, but heard nothing in the real world. 😉Not sure about specific models as yet – the Escape looks good for it’s small size and the Renegade

MemberI owned a Outlaw X5, not a frameless model, but I can vouch for the quality. They took a while to ship it to me, but it was a great boat and put together really well.

George F.MemberDavid-
I have been using an X-5 for three years. Mostly on the upper Delaware river system bordering NY and Pennsylvania. Mostly I am very happy with it, and when I think of how I use mine, I am not sure how a frameless would work. The Outcast X5 has a comfy seat, you can stand up, and the platform is sufficient for quite a bit of gear. There is an anchor system that I wish was more robust, but works well.
The way I fish it is mostly to float along, get away from crowds, and look for targets. Sometimes I anchor and shore fish. Sometimes I pound the bank with zoo dungeons, pet cougars. I don’t know, those flies confuse me, but big ugly streamers.
Now my favorite way to fish is to not sit in the seat, but to sit on the platform. With my feet in the water I can kick and swirl my feet enough to control the drift. Sometimes my feet hit bottom, and I can move slowly down the river while nymphing riffles or casting to the bank. I have not tried flippers, not wanting to have them on my feet when I get out to wade. When I am sitting on the lower platform I can jump out right away, with a word of caution, I have been surprised by the depth once or twice. But sitting on the platform with my legs in the water helps to keep me cool on a warm day.
Typically I bring three rods with me.

George F.MemberStruggling with Pictures. Here are some of my X5. I use a trailer. Pull it out of the water, slide it on, stow some gear, and go! Very nice at 10pm in the dark!
With the trailer it is very quick to launch, very quick to retrieve.

David AndersonMemberThanks for that Matt and G.. 😎
(pictures much appreciated as well ;))Hadn’t considered the framed boats because of weight and my near fatal lack of talent when reversing trailers is required :-[ though the idea of the boat being ready to go has appeal..
Pity there’s nowhere to compare the different models here in Australia..

George F.MemberDave- I think we can all attest to the quality of scadden produts. I have seen some of the lesser brands. I think you have to figure out how and where you will use it. I started with a Native Ultimate Kayak, then went to the Scadden. Important to me was fishing standing up. I can do that, it was iffy on a kayak. Anchoring. Very important to me. Comfort and rigging. Can’t beat the way you can rig a kayak. But my Scadden is nicely rigged.
The trailer is my preference. At the end of a log day I like packing 2-3 items, and going. On both the kayak and the Scadden I used a trailer. The Scadden only weighs about 80 pounds. But it is so darn nice to drag it out of the water and go at the end of a day. I did the same with my Kayak.
I have only taken mine apart once to store in the winter time. It stays assembled all the time.
I do wear a PFD almost all of the time. I fish in very cold tailwaters. I always have chest waders on when I use it.G
