Hey Zach, is this now cover shot only? Or is it still open to horizontal shots – like TOC 2 pager’s?
And also, since Phil is working for the likes of Outdoor Life and potentially other non-fly fishing magazines, is this open to hunting type shots?

Sweet fish. Heading back to Erie in a week. I must say I like how easy it is to catch fish over there. Guess thats what happens when well over a million fish are stocked a year.
Ya, i just heard last week that the michigan DNR has been trading Little
Manistee steelhead eggs to one of the states down there (ohio?) for catfish eggs.Even though i am far from an expert at 2-hander casting, one tip i remind myself of is to make sure your still stopping the rod high – 10 o’clock or whatever.
Canon has a function called Highlight Tone Priority on their newer models. It is supposed to be similar in function to the ADR of the nikons, how it actually compares, i can’t say for sure. I will try and post some shots with the sun in them like that. Next time i have the opportunity, i need to fire a few with the HTP on and off for comparison.
Jay, does that blue toned and the first one one have any other exposure or contrast/tone work done to it? The clouds have a kind of HDR/High contrast look to them. Or maybe the clarity in lightroom was cranked up a bit. Thats cool if you can get that with camera!
The last shot of the river is a great one too! I like it the best so far.
Aaron O. was giving me some tips on these kinds of shots a while back, and one thing i learned is it helps alot to have the sun/sky partially obscured with clouds, an object, etc. Line it up so you get the burst, but not the full effect of the sun.

This thread got me googling on lightroom speed stuff again, and i came across this.
I have a folder called “canon” inside which all the original files live.. its where lightroom dumps all the imported files into a date based folder system (/canon/200d/11/09 for ex.)

“This style of spey casting utilizes an even shorter head length spey line than the WindCutter – something in the region of 27 ft. This exceptionally short head length allows the fly caster to make long casts in extremely tight situations. Even the most basic of spey casters can make a 70 ft cast with no more than 3 ft of room behind. Added to the shortness of the line is the fact that the head weighs about the same amount as the corresponding WindCutter, but at half the length. This means that the Skagit line has almost twice the weight per inch of the WindCutter line. This extra weight per inch is an immense asset for lifting out deeply sunken tips or heavy, large flies. Nothing will pick up big flies or T-14 or LC13 style sink tips as easily as a Skagit line will.”

It sounds like the windcutter is quite a bit different in design than the skagit. Thats the problem with this whole deal.. there are no industry standards for the line weights, and it makes the whole thing really confusing.
Beyond that, you need to take the head length of the skagit divided by the grains – 450/27.5=16.4 grains/foot. So leaders for a 450 grain head need to be less than that to work the best, how much less depends on the length of the leader to a certain extent.
