InactiveSpent the better part of 3 days fishing some tributaries of Lake Erie this past weekend. Everything was setting up perfectly for a great weekend on the big river until a small raincloud burst put just enough H2O in the watershed to blow it out again….so we were left to our devices to make the best of the smaller rivers and hope for the best.
I had my brother in law with me and this was his first ever foray into the world of Steelhead. All in all I think he had a good time and he came away from the trip with a handfull of fish. Its always fun to introduce someone to this fishery and see their reaction when they hook into a fish that is measured in pounds rather than inches.
While we didnt get into the numbers we were hoping for the quality more than made up for the lack of quantity.

Below is the monster I landed.

MemberNice work TimScott. Chris makes a much better subject than my fat ass. Sorry I couldn’t be there. The pictures never quite do the big fish justice.
Perhaps this would make an interesting thread for all the photo geeks out there…
Without all of the fancy gear, all of the computer editing work, holding the fish with your arms streatched out –What are some tips for “point and shoot” digital camera guys to capture our prizes on film?

MemberSweet fish. Heading back to Erie in a week. I must say I like how easy it is to catch fish over there. Guess thats what happens when well over a million fish are stocked a year.

Ya, i just heard last week that the michigan DNR has been trading Little
Manistee steelhead eggs to one of the states down there (ohio?) for catfish eggs.Nov 14, 2009 at 3:23 pm #40100anonymous

I can’t imagine how much commotion a fish that size stirs up when it’s angry in a smaller river. I bet you had a battle on your hands.TW
Actually, in those small creeks, sometimes they don’t do much.

MemberEric,
Yeah I read that too. But the Michigan fish are better fish in my mind. Lake Michigan produces some of the hardest fighting fish in the Great Lakes. I almost hate to say but I can see why guys like Dec Hogan refer to the fish as “Tinheads” instead of steelhead.
I was planning on heading over this coming weekend, but hear the water is very low. I may have to head over to the Cat in NY, or head up to Michigan. Where ever there is water I will be there swinging some flies.

MemberI did something really stupid during the weekend, I ran into a guy with a switch rod and took a few drifts with it. Needless to say I might be shopping a bit before next fall.
There is nothing stupid about that. That is all I use beside my two-handers for steelhead. I have a 6wt and an 8wt Sage, and will be getting the 7wt. Sage soon. They are great tools. I have done everything with them. All of my steelhead this year have been caught using a switch rod.
