BTW-Should any of you have a strong desire for the Carp, and want to come to Dallas, I have them 300 yards behind me as I type. Also, we could drive in any direction for less than two hours and find carp in the 20-30 pound range. I do not profess to having caught them, but I do know where they are. Still working on the other part of it. Who ever thought one would need a 10 wt. on Texas’ rivers?

That carp was caught at Lake Ray Roberts, North of the D/FW Metro. We may not have Salmonids year ’round, but we have a generous supply of almost all of the warmwater fish one could dream of. We set out early at another destination, in search of carp. But that locale was blown out, so we headed North. Found some tribs., fingers in the lake, etc. We stalked, slowly, for two hours, covering only about 200-300 yrds of shorline. Most of the Golden Bones picked us off before we even saw them; they left behind only puffs of silt. This one is small! We got into some 10+ pounders a few weeks ago. Here’s an honest truth: If you ever want to test your presentation skills, go for the Carp!

The sky and skin tones in yours look better than mine. What did you do to get the differences? I know it is a different software, but are there any similar tools? Or should I just use Aperture for storage and pick up Photoshop?

DustyIf that is the case, Matt, get a renter’s policy. Even if you do or do not have anything worth covering to that amount, at least you get your gear covered. I pay 12 or 13 bucks/month for $15,000 coverage. I remember the term now; W/ Sate Farm it is called a multi-line discount.
Just a thought: You are a pro. fisherman, do pro. fishermen/guides not need cameras even if they are not pro. photogs? Every guide I ever worked with had camera gear. It may all be in the wording!

I do not know why that agent is giving you hell. I too have State Farm, everything from life, car, renters, and a private policy covers my wife’s ice, our computers, etc. I was able to cover anything I wanted to on the private policy w/o proving I was a pro. in that given field. You may try another agent w/ State Farm. If it will help, you can sell me your worst photo for one dollar; then you will be a paid professional!Sorry to all you guys doing it for a living, just trying to help a brother!
The one thing that may have helped me is what they call a line discount, I think. It basically means that all of my insurance needs are covered by them, and maybe they allowed some slack.
BTW, you still in Dallas?

For the neophyte buying this equipment, will it be easy to determine U.S. from Gray product? Should I look at the literature, box, or look for some identification on the body/lens?

My first fly rod was a Cabela’s Prestige. It did what I needed it to and didn’t break the bank. Now, however, I cannot imagine having to fish with it. The point being this: If you think your Dad will take off with the sport, I would suggest a rod he will not outgrow quickly. As he has been in the business of fishing for some time, I am sure he will appreciate the differences in actions from one rod to another.

Those are great shots of the kids! Glad to hear the body is doing what you want it to. Makes me lean toward a similar purchase and pot the savings on new glass down the road like so many here have suggested.

Does the XTi do all that you need in a camera, or do you find yourself wanting more features? I only ask b/c I am new also and still on the fence regarding which body I am going to purchase.

I know an Orvis-endorsed guide in N. Texas, and he relies only on his status as an O’-endorsed guide to generate business. To my knowledge, he does not advertise otherwise. And if he can make a sustainable living in N. Texas as a fly-fishing guide, I would think you could do the same in a place like MT w/o breaking the bank to generate clientele.
DustyI went to Sweet Water Travel Co.’s guides school in ’06. It was a good time and the instruction was solid. I did, however, at the end of the week find myself wishing I had learned more. You go out with two other students and an instructor. One student guides/rows and the other two fish. This is what happened with me most of the time. The time behind the oars was invaluable, as was the fly-tying time. I wish there had been more time spent on casting though.
As far as working for them after you are done, you better be damn good. But yes, they do help in placement. Look at their web site, then call Ron Meek. He will give you all of the details. He is an awesome guy. At the very least, some people treat it as a vacation where you learn a lot about the sport, and doing this vacation is cheaper than it would be if you stayed on the Bighorn R. or Yellowstone for a week and fished paying for hotel, food, drift boat, launch, etc., etc.
If you feel that one week is not enough, there are some other schools that offer two week courses, and others that offer month long courses which include fly-fishing, hunting, and a list of other skills. I think one of them is called Winterhawk.

I hear ya. We need the pros. here to provide a key for those of us not in the know quite yet.
Regarding the bag, I keep my gear in a cheap rolltop, but the good stuff is still placed inside a Pelican for extra insurance. I got them at Wal-mart, three or four of them for the price of one Simms. I am hard on gear, so this seemed the best route for me.
