I took my Dad fly fishing yesterday for the first time.

    Neal,
My first fly rod was a Cabela’s Prestige. It did what I needed it to and didn’t break the bank. Now, however, I cannot imagine having to fish with it. The point being this: If you think your Dad will take off with the sport, I would suggest a rod he will not outgrow quickly. As he has been in the business of fishing for some time, I am sure he will appreciate the differences in actions from one rod to another.

8.5 foot 4 wt TFO profesional light enough for fun panfishing, heavy enough to bring in the occasional bass that will hit panfish stuff.

In other words a medium fast 4 wt gets my vote…

    I would have to say a 8 1/2ft 5wt – You could do 4wt. WF floating line.

    I like a 5wt better than a 4.

I just got the latest issue of Fly Fisherman today and there is a great article on bluegill fishing by Dave Whitlock.
