I agree that a 1 (depending on the action of course ) is pretty far down the scale, you might get a better allround twig with a 2 weight in mid length (7 -8 feet ish)..
Or a short 3, they throw hoppers and larger dries pretty easy yet are still twiggy in feel.

The Sage XP 11′ #6 is a great rod for big water nymphing, I’ve used one on the Tongariro river for the last few years and it’s the best rod for the big team of flies and huge indicator used there.
With a 7 weight line this thing will lift & cast a lot of weight with no fuss.I’ve seen a couple for sale second hand here in OZ in the last couple months.

I think the SLT 9′ #4 is one of the best trout rods ever and if it wasn’t for the TCR6 I would say it was the best Sage rod I’ve ever owned or cast.
Winston also make some real sweet sticks in 4 weight, the 8′ WT is a lovely rod as well.So that’s a tough question – and my answer is now ZXL.
Just got one in 8’6 #3 and it’s a lovely rod, I can’t compare it directly to an SLT #3 because I’ve only got the 2 and 4, but what I can say is it’s VERY smooth and a very sweet rod.
Haven’t fished with it yet because my first trip of the season starts this thursday, so I’ll give everyone a full rundown when I get back.www.dsaphoto.com

Jpegs out of modern cameras are good and getting better – they are however still a compromise.
A raw file with a little effort will always give you a better image.
You do your contrast, sharpness, white balance, saturation ect ect ect shot by shot.As to memory cards – they now cost less than shooting film did per shot.
I could shoot a 4 gig, download it and then throw it away and still be spending less than I used to on the smae number of shots on tranny film with proc.

I haven’t tried one yet – to busy trying to get my greasy mitts on the DSIII .. 😉
35mm is not wide enough for shooting on boats IMO, not even close.
Mind you, that would be for publishing shots, for personal stuff it would be fine for man with fish shots and some limited landscape stuff.
If you’re looking at adaptors make sure they’re quick & easy to use – you wouldn’t want to be stuck with it on or off while trying to shoot.

All very nice Eric, I like the mix of detail & situations shots.
My favorite is the kids at the end because it’s a strong portrait of the one child in front but by going a bit wider and getting a bit of the other kids in you’ve given it greater depth.

Hi Will, I agree, you have a beautiful website, I love the river shots..
Your gear shots are also very well done – it’s great to see such hi quality in fishing photos, I think it adds sizzle to our sport.I also agree that a lot of fly photography is boring and I try to do all mine out on the water.

I have a bunch of dry bags in sizes from single lens or flash up to 30 litres, the soft ones are very light, fold up very small and are a good thing to have a couple off if the weather turns nasty.
Another kind you can get is a little more solid with a couple D rings on them and in the smaller sizes you can stash a second lens and wear it like a sling.
I get them from canoe shops.

Hi Matt,
This is a question that has more answers then George W has enemies…
First thing you need is a soft light source above the fly ( a couple feet ), an on camera flash with mini softbox or bouncer is good enough.
The flash should be almost directly overhead but angled in slightly from the lens ( 20 deg. ? )Below the fly you need a white reflector ( bright white card or heavy paper ) it also needs to be almost directly below but angled up slightly from the front (again 20 deg. ).
You need to do this in a space where the flash wont bonce light off other surfaces and might even need to black out around the front, back and sides.
You dont want dead flat light like i see in a few shots of this nature, IMO shadows give a photo shape and depth, flat light is boring.
Behind the fly you can have almost any background from paper to board or even a shirt or wall.
You need to experiment with the distance from the fly to the background to get the color and level of blur you like.
A lot of this will depend on the lens you use and how far back from the fly it is when focused close enought to fill the frame.For example moving the fly from 2 to 3 feet from a mid blue background might change it to dark blue in the picture.
It’s a very hard thing to type out, you need to have a muck around and see what comes out..
You can get light tents that surround the fly and are lit from above but I don’t like the look they give shots, flat and lifeless.
