Mike, I was in Joberg for a few days with the Stones in 95 or 06 (?) and it was a real eye opener.. 😮
No disrespect, but by the last day I was very ready to leave.
I felt like the only guy in Dodge without a gun and the desire to shoot someone..You should do like so many of your fellow country men and move to Sydney.
We call you the new boat people, that is you come here and get a boat.. 😀
Sydney has good trout fishing within 3 hours and excellent saltwater all around.

Dusty, the 50 1.4 is a great lens, but no macro, it’s awesome in low light though and is a cheap way to great bokeh.
On a crop it’s a great portrait lens as well.The 50 2.5 is a macro lens and will do half life size with no extensions and life size with the dedicated extension tube.
(Whoops, on a crop it would be almost life size-)One problem with the 50 2.5 is it has the old focus motor in it and can be a bit slow and clunky (or like a modern Nikon AF lens

The kit lens is ok, but no better.
The 17-40 on the other hand is very good, but at a price.
I think it’s worth paying more for good lenses, I would rather have a couple good ones than a bag full of crap.
That said, if all your doing is posting shots here and doing the odd print or a blog or something the kit lens will be fine and save you some money.www.dsaphoto.com

28mm (full frame) is wide enough for most things and is where you still get a wide shot without distortion or soft corners on most lenses.
It’s a very useful length for shooting people on the water as well because it’s wide enough to show where you’re fishing, but not so wide as to loose the angler.The 17-40 on your crop frame would be a 28-60 (ish) and be a very useful zoom.
You don’t have to have an L on your Canon lens for it to be great, the 50 & 100 Macro’s, 35 2, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 and 100 f2 are all great lenses and are more than capable of pro results.
If you get the 17-40, the 100 macro and the 70-200 F4L IS, you would have a great set of lenses for fishing stuff.
I use the same kit when I go except I have the 16-35 2.8 II because I shoot a lot of low light stuff in my normal work, but it’s only faster than the 17-40, not sharper..

I like the 17-40 f4 L.
It’s good value and will work on a full frame if you get one in the future.
I think all these cameras are heading to full frame anyway.

I love the out of focus foerground with the bears sharp in the background – it really makes the point.
Also, the bear in the tree is excellent..I don’t know if I could relax enough to fish with all of those bears around.

That brown’s from the Thredbo river, some of them get that steely color in them in the flat light.
The river itself is one of our best, most of it is in national park and it’s very well manged by fisheries.
It has Browns, rainbows and the odd large brook trout in it and gets big spawn runs in spring and the fall.
I mostly fish it in the upper reaches where it can be tight and perfect water for a 2 weight, but I’ve also had the odd trip to the lower river chasing fish in the 4 – 6 pound range.
Every so often something much bigger get’s caught there. 😉I did a story on it a while back for Flylife and I will do a picture post from it when I get a minute..

My wife was interested in fly fishing for a couple years before we got married, but now is happy to get rid of me for a few days.. 😉I feel you there David. Tara, my wife, will ask everyonce in a while,
“Aaron, don’t you think you should go fishing, its been a couple days?”
I want to take her out on the saltwater with one of the guides, she could fish in the morning when the action’s at it’s best and then lie around on a beach for a while in the afternoon.
Some of the locations like Hervey Bay, Hinchinbrok and even Sydney harbor have great beaches where other people don’t easily get to..We both have winter cabin fever pretty bad at the moment..

I love light rods and have a fair few, though I’m yet to go below a 2 weight as the lines are not common here..

Those shots of the card above are done in a church where I had to shoot a christening for a big client of mine..
(yes, he hosed me into doing it for a favor ;))The first is looking down towards the floor and checking the light from above and the second is near some big windows where a lot of daylight was facing a very well lit back wall.
You can see all the warm lights out of focus in the background.What the the card did was give me a good starting point for all the shots in the situation no matter what direction I was shooting.
To find a middle ground, where I can shoot at will and only end up with small corrections if any at all.That’s what I use it for – and I’ve found the more I use it the better I get a reading the light without it or a grey card.
That’s the way it worked in the stone ages when we shot film and had to filter.
You had to have an idea what color the light was in the first place.Where am I going with this ?
(no really, help ! ;D)You need to see the basic light when shooting outdoors and learn to make changes when the light changes.
Say for example in open sun your at 5600 (depending on camera) and if it goes light cloud 6000 or in heavy overcast you might like the look of 7500.
There will be times when the light changes too fast and you might use auto or just do a shed load of corrections in post.If you play around with it enough you will get very fast at the changes and IMHO, get much better raws to work with.
If the light isn’t changing you will have time to much about with a grey card or color chart.
The color temp setting on my cameras is now in a very easy to reach custom menu and I can change it in a couple seconds.

I finally went to the bow river on my honeymoon (a while back ;)), for years it had been a dream of mine to hire a guide and do a drift trip, but when we got to Calgary they were having the coldest November in 100 years and the thing was an ice-flow.. 🙁

I use the mini one – it gives you a good idea of where the light is at and is nice for checking in post.
On studio or big location shoots I do a frame of it after setting a manual WB and then check ir both on screen and in camera.
It’s a great tool.

I can’t stand auto WB from any camera I’ve tried – they always look off.
I set a manual temp and maybe change the green/magenta a little in post with mixed lighting, but that’s all.
On some hard light situations a grey card can help !A good thing about working in manual is that you have to learn to see the color of the light to work quickly – it’s a great skill to have on the job.
It also saves a lot of post work.
Like John I only shoot raws..
