noneMemberI generally fish about 2 weeks worth of fishing a year and only on trout streams abroad. I could do all kind of nice still water fishing (not trouts btw) here in The Netherlands, but I prefer trout fishing in rivers and streams.
Oh, did I mention I have to drive 8-9 hours at least to reach the rivers I like?
It’s still not too bad though! š

David AndersonMemberYou guys carry on like teenage girls – think you have fishing problems ??
I’m stuck in the dead of winter and have to read your summer trip reports and look through the beautiful pictures..
It’s freezing this morning as well, must be down to 45 or 50

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

I traded a lot of fishing years for the joy of children and for the difficulties of starting a business.

MemberItinerant 300 yards to the creek behind my house. Ā Sometimes when I’m on call I get so itchy to fish it’s all I can do not to go crazy.

BTW that’s a size 14 mini-wooly-bugger, ha. ĀAug 5, 2008 at 1:06 am #28073Zach Matthews

MemberIn a lifetime of fishing and 14 years of fly fishing, Iāve never been on a true ādestinationā fly fishing trip, never hired a guide, never fished out west. Ā (Although I have hit a few exotic places while going about other business.) Ā By choice, I live a modest life doing a job I like for not much money. Ā Now I work part-time to be at home with my daughter, and weāre about as poor as weāve ever been (which is not very poor by world standards). Ā
āSeriousā fishing is a state of mind. Ā I consider myself as hardcore as most non-professional anglers, and thatās why I canāt get too jealous of the globetrotters. Ā Itās rare for me to go 7 days without casting a line. Ā Instead of destination fishing, I try to find success in every sport fishery within a 2-hour drive of the house. Ā When I hit a good one, I stick with it until I know something about it. Ā When I canāt fish, I peruse Google maps, read message boards and online articles. Ā I compile files with maps and notes. Ā If I live here a lifetime Iāll never explore all the possibilities available to the intrepid angler with a canoe and 2 fly rods. Ā I got a second-hand baby backpackāwhile we slide into poverty, Miranda and I are hitting every local flow in town. Ā I feel your pain and all, I just didnāt want you to think we were all rich playboys (no offense to the rich playboys).

John BennettMemberDavid A, I’ll take your definition of winter any day.
Im in the 60+ hr work week club. Out the door every day at 5:30am and home at 6pm. Whoever coinded the phrase “Bankers Hours” should be sho. Two kids, housework and a dog, luckily I have a understanding wife and a stream behind my house. Despite that travel is almost a no go for me. If its not close to home chances are I’m not seeing it. It’s starting to wear on me, given I’d kill for a few days with good photography/fishing opportunity. The same old same old gets wearisome.
But it could be worse.
I could get transferred to Johannesburg šAug 5, 2008 at 5:10 am #28078
Simon ChuMemberWell….
I live in New ZealandThere was this guy…
He was doing a thesis on Churches around the world
Every church he went to had this big gold telephone at the back and apparently if he put in 10000 bucks he’d have a direct line to God…When he came to NZ there was no gold telephone….
In one church there was a wee black wind up phone with a sign that said 20 cents a call……He asked the pastor what’s the story with that phone?
Pastor said “its the direct line to God”
“But its only 20 cents” said the guy
“Yep, thats right son.. round here its a local call” š
Tim, fishermen are welcome to NZ anytime and we are a land of immigrants too.

Mike, I was in Joberg for a few days with the Stones in 95 or 06 (?) and it was a real eye opener.. š®
No disrespect, but by the last day I was very ready to leave.
I felt like the only guy in Dodge without a gun and the desire to shoot someone..You should do like so many of your fellow country men and move to Sydney.
We call you the new boat people, that is you come here and get a boat.. š
Sydney has good trout fishing within 3 hours and excellent saltwater all around.

MemberSeriously, we all make choices and, unfortunately we can’t chose everything. Ā Fish when you can, work when you have to and enjoy life, it’s all you really have.
Great words…
