If your shooting with a 1.6x camera, check out the ef-s 10-22. Its super wide (equal to the 16-35 on a full frame). I have had some great results with it.

That’s a pretty funky grade all right and it works well enough for the shot.
I like the base shot with the exception that the feet are cut off or at least not quite in the frame, makes it look a little sloppy IMHO.
Overall it’s cool.

There’s a ‘Lomo’ shop is Sydney, and it’s very popular..
I know a guy who did an entire portfolio to show around ad agencies on one – and he got work !
They are sort of interesting I suppose.. 😮
My favorite crappy (to a point) camera is the Polaroid 600SE that was made by Mamiya, I have 3 of them and even though you cant get much in the way of film for them I hate to let them go.
It was a cheap version of the ‘Press’ camera.
I’ve shot a lot of Polaroid 665 Pos/neg through them because I love the messy borders from the edge of the neg.The lenses are a little bit soft, but the film surface is almost 5×4′ so they give really smooth detailed shots with lovely gradations.

Slight hijack, but here’s a high ISO sample from the old days –
It’s shot on Tmax 3200, at the time the film was a revalution and opened up a huge range of new options.
The light at this show was shocking and the pit full of photographers so I had to try something different to sell anything.
I shot the Tmax at 6400 ISO and printed it hard with a blue tone and then took a medium format slide of the print and sent it out.
(still think film is better than digital ?- that process would have taken many hours back then. 😉 :D)
Here’s another shot on Fuji 400 pushed two stops – at the time I thought it was good color, now it would go in the bin..

I found an example of the 400CN film – (no peanut oil ;))
This was a shoot for Rolling Stone (Aust.) of one of our biggest bands, I didn’t have much time or a good location so I did quick individual shots of all 5 members with the 100 Macro and small Canon ring flash and had the lab process the film with a strong blue tone.
The magazine loved it and it was very easy to do..

Thanks for posting those, they’re very interesting.
I’m still dithering about Lightroom, but the filters may push me over the line, ND’s and grads were very useful in my medium format film years.

Good point, I forgot to ask what camera – the 16-35 is designed around full frames, it might not be wide enough on a crop..

Yeah, it bends a bit on a full frame, but it’s much better then the old model and very useable.
You can get correction softwear, though I never bother with it and none of my clients complain..
(to my face :D)All the zooms are going to bend a bit on very wide, if you have a subject where that would be a problem you need to come back to 20+ to fix it up.
In the real world the shots you get at 16 are dramatic and the distortion isn’t really a problem.

The 28 1.8 would be worth a look or the 35 f2, both are light and sharp enough near wide open.
The 35 1.4 is a monster lens, the best Canon wide IMO and I love it.
It’s a great lens wide open or stopped down and the focal length is wide, but has little or no distortion and produces shots that are interesting without being stretched..
In zooms the 16-35 2.8 II is also a great lens and what I use the most for fishing photos.

Seriously, all aspects of photography seem under pressure at the moment..
We get a lot of job offers where it’s all I can do not to laugh in their face, but there’s still some good clients around, just have to keep the chin up and keep looking..

I see a lot of ad stuff coming out of New Zealand at the moment, they have some great photographers and even better locations and their dollar is pretty low as well.
I’ve offered to move there to work, but my wife knows I would just fish and she would have to win bread.. 😉
We have thought about looking for work in New York in June and July while it’s dead here, I hear the money on a catalogue shoot is pretty good – know any good agents ?

Anyone that was unhappy with that sort of high ISO quality never had to shoot Fuji 400 tranny at +2 in low light.

I don’t agree about noise and high pixel counts, my DsIII’s are very good at high ISO and even on huge prints 1600 is very nice provided it’s well shot.
They’re about 10 times better than film ever was.Noise in general is overstated in reviews by pixel peepers who don’t do anything with photos other than gawk at them on-screen.
A lot of people also confuse noise & grain.A bigger problem with high rez cameras is going to be lens quality, I think the 12-13 MP range doesn’t challenge most lenses, but above that can really show up any short comings.
I do agree it’s great that Sony have dived into the market in such a big way, it will bring prices down and features up with Canon & Nikon.
You can already see a drop in prices at Canon since Nikon removed their finger from their butt and started playing ball again.It’s all good.. 😉

Even without the tube a min. focus of 26 inches is very good – might be the perfect lens for shooting fish.

The guy in the pano is Gordon Low and is the second best caster I know after Morsie (yes, I’m jelous :D), makes it easier to get casting shot when you fish with guys that can. 😉
Here’s one with some backlight – the line is flat green, but still stands out against the dark water – not a bad loop either, that’s the #2 SLT.
This is some black Basalt in far north Queensland – not a bad backdrop either.

What’s the min. focus distance with the 85 on the 12mm ?
I bet that would be great for general fishing stuff if all you had to do was add the tube to get some macro happening..I have to try the 200 with a tube – the 1.9 mtr (6 feet?) min. focus distance is a bit long !
My 300 /4 as an example comes down to 1.5 (5feet ?)
Also going to give it a run on a 1.4 extender soon.

John, the 85 1.8 and 100 F2 are both sweet lenses and both are a bargain and don’t suffer when compared for sharpness to the more expensive L’s.
With the 70-200’s I would go for the f4 L IS – it’s sharper then the 2.8 and much lighter, the stop you loose is easy made up with the improved high ISO performance.The 135 F2 is another awesome lens, I think it’s good value for it’s quality and a little easier to handle when chasing a 3 year old around.. 😉
