John BennettMemberFor you Nikon shooters who are maybe considering an upgrade and given a couple recent threads. ย I asked and received permission from friend to repost his samples.
I personally am blown away and cant wait for Canon to announce the new 5D with their new technology. Im going to be very sorely tempted to put my lens purchase on theback burner and get a 2nd/back up body
Again these are someone else pictures reposted with permission. Evening and night fastball.
ISO 1,600

ISO 1,600

ISO 4,000

ISO 5000. Still extremely useable

ISO 6000. Maybe not good enough for print, but certainly for personal use

Well done Nikon.

The Itinerant AnglerISO 6000 would certainly be good enough for any newspaper and most magazines.

Ben CochranMemberThose are great John and both the D3 and D700 are excellent camera’s, especially for low light.
Perhaps I am just a sick photographer but it looks like we are getting back to the good ole days of 2 body’s again :). I kind of like the idea of better defined tools, that both capture great images. Jut this time; the tools are defined on their ISO performance and file size. ๐ A perfectly usable file size at unreal ISO settings and the future D3x for larger file size in typical ISO ranges. It is a good world ๐

David AndersonMemberNothing wrong with those.. ๐
Anyone that was unhappy with that sort of high ISO quality never had to shoot Fuji 400 tranny at +2 in low light.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

David AndersonMemberSlight hijack, but here’s a high ISO sample from the old days –
It’s shot on Tmax 3200, at the time the film was a revalution and opened up a huge range of new options.
The light at this show was shocking and the pit full of photographers so I had to try something different to sell anything.
I shot the Tmax at 6400 ISO and printed it hard with a blue tone and then took a medium format slide of the print and sent it out.
(still think film is better than digital ?- that process would have taken many hours back then. ๐ :D)
Here’s another shot on Fuji 400 pushed two stops – at the time I thought it was good color, now it would go in the bin..

John BennettMemberIts amazing when you look back and realise it wasnt really all that long ago. Occasionally I look through some old issues of magazines and not what was being then vs whats printed now.
