Micheal, have a look at some of the old work of the masters like Ansel Adams or Weston for example – a lot of them had very rigid, scientific methods in their work and were not arty farty types.

A lot of the pro advertising and landscape shooters I know are very scientific as opposed to creative as well.

As posted above, I would learn manual settings and work towards understanding how the camera and lens are working at different settings and how that is best applied to specific situations.

here’s a great website for tutorials and info on all things geeky photographic:

The beams are for longer distances and shooting things like birds, if you’re shooting macro at 6 – 10 feet I think they would be too hard.

What about a small softbox mounted on an extendable pole that could be held over the subject or to the side off it to get nice shape ?

Lastolite amongst others make portable softboxes for on camera flash.

Another idea if you need more grunt are the new Quadra battery flash units from Elinchrom, I haven’t got one yet, but from what I’ve seen they will be perfect for location work where an on camera unit just isn’t enough.

in reply to: Macro Lense #66038

I know it’s expensive, but the Canon 100 Macro is an awesome lens and well worth the money.

Maybe look for a used one if money is tight ?

The 50mm Macro is also a very good lens and not as expensive, though the AF is slow by modern standards, the lens is very sharp.

Hi Phil, I thought your opening up the magazines photos to submissions from all the snappers here was inspired for a magazine editor.
(and I’ve met a few in the last 20 years)

Thanks for that, have a good Christmas and best of luck in the new year.

    Cheers.

In the review above, Ken Rockwell indicates that the new generation of camera electronics eliminates the need to shoot and process RAW for most applications. Β

For those that have upgraded to one of the newer camera models, have you moved away from shooting RAW?

    Hmmmm, Ken Rockwell said –

in reply to: First Impressions – Patagonia Stormfront Pack #32213

I use a large flat Pelian case when I take the cameras on boats, with the padded dividers it’s easy to set up for quick shooting and also has room for a bit of tackle and a jacket.

Most of the time the lid is shut, but not tight and that keeps out the worst of the weather or spray, but if things get nasty it get’s shut tight and I don’t need to worry about anything.

Of course, the only problem with Pelicans is lugging them around on shore.

Hi Matt, thanks for putting this up !

As ever, finding a decent pack for fishing and lugging cameras around water is real hard.
I had a Dri-zone for a while, but it was such a piece of sh*t that I found myself swearing at it streamside and cursing it’s designers, πŸ˜€ in the end I gave it to my assistant.

Can I ask if it has a decent waist belt ?
