Some indoor stuff is just plain hard to get right without serious lighting, in fact most interior shooting is hard.
If you have a good flash you can use something like the Stoffen diffuser and a high ISO (800 depending on camera) and a slower shutter speed – you point the flash up and the diffuser spreads the light around the room.
This will give you overly warm light in the room you describe, but with a manual white balance you should be able to take a lot of that out.You might also put a warming gel filter on the flash to match the color of it to the ambient light and then shoot at around 4000K (WB) to blend it all.
Hard to say without seeing more of the shop.

I think Luminous-landscape is very good because the subject matter is very similar to fishing photography.
The forum is a bit dry, but very good – lots of top photographers there.DPReview is ok for gear tests, but the forum is a joke – full of nasty know it all’s & GWC’s who know nothing.. 😉

Toyota was thinking of bringing the bigger trucks out here, but never got around to it because sales of the Hilux (1 ton -metric payload) were massive here.
I don’t like them much myself because i think they’re a bit expensive compared to what they’re competing with and softer then the old model off road, but I’m the exception – they have at times been the #1 selling car in Oz and have a huge reputation for reliability.
Here’s a review of the diesel – it costs around 55K on the road here.

I like the design, but think it would look better with the large graphic on the back and a smaller version of the same under the ‘feeding your addiction’ on the front.
Do people around you read the front and back of your short at the same time ?

Is this just a full fledged version Photoshop issue? Â If I upgrade cameras to a new camera (40D,50D, 5D MK1, or 5D Mk2) will my current software not be compatible? Â Currently I am using Canon DPP and Elements 2.0.
I think you need CS4 for the 5DmkII, but the others are fine in Cs3 – I would recommend the full versions over light..

The problem (depending on the camera you use) is that CS2 (ACR3.0) will not support RAW files from newer cameras. For example, I have a Canon 5D Mk2 and CS4. I had to upgrade from CS3 to CS4 (ACR4 to ACR5) in order to process the files.
Bit of a rip-off isn’t it..
I’m at the point where my computers go into meltdown when they see me coming with a stack of memory cards and I should update them, but the thought of having to make everything work again with new system softwear makes my head spin.

A great Canon lens for fishing stuff is the 17-40 f4L, on either a crop frame or full frame it’s great quality and a good range.
If you add a macro lens (like the 100) it would be all you need most of the time.The 24-105 is a good lens, though not wide enough for a lot of fishing shots IMHO on the crop frame.

Hi Mike, I can’t add much to what the guys have posted above.
I use CS3 now and edit with Bridge.
The first thing I do is a savage edit – anything where the composition is not great or the expression not great is binned.
The next step is to check sharpness on the edit – a shot has to be very interesting before I’ll not bin it for being even a bit soft.
Next is exposure and proper levels are set frame by frame by eye and later when converting from raws they may get another small tweak.
Exposure is always subjective and the camera only does an average.Color is last and most of the time my shots don’t need much adjustment because I shoot manual white balance and change the setting a lot trough the day (when fishing) or set it only once when in the studio.
Most color adjustments are to get nice skin-tones in people stuff.
I almost never sharpen anything.
My advice, as ever, is to get stuff as right as you can when shooting and spend less time on the computer if you can..

The condensed version:
In the late 80’s I was working in a huge record and musical instrument shop and doing a bit of weekend warrior camera stuff with friends bands for free beers.
On day Aerosmith came to the record department to sign records & hang out and the guy from the store that organized it only allowed me to shoot it, the rest of the Sydney media was furious.
(my first rock exclusive ;D)One of the picture agencies in England found out and asked if they could sell the shots for me and I sent them a big pile of B&W prints surprised they would be worth anything to anyone.
He sold them all over Europe and a heap of them in Japan.
The local music press also bought a few of the shots from me and ended up asking me to shoots some bands and shows for them.A couple years later after some success shooting gigs for next to nothing for the music mags and selling the odd shot through the agency, People magazine in the US launched a local version called WHO weekly and the agent got me a meeting with the new picture editor.
I scattered my B&W stuff out for her and she pointed to the Aerosmith stuff and said “I love those guys’ and I did hundreds of jobs for them over the next 10 years..Work with them got me great exposure and by 1995 I was working for almost everyone in the music biz here and getting stuff published worldwide.
When the music industry started to splutter (round 2000) I had to do a lot of outside work to survive and ended up a little jaded with the business and tired of taking pictures.
To re-ignite the passion I started shooting some fishing stuff and now feel like I have another 20 years in me..
(my knees and old mans taste in music would argue about that ;))

I can’t help with this much because I’ve used none of the cameras – but I will make the point that every time Canon make an upgrade you get much faster processing speed in the camera, much better menus and better battery life.
In my last upgrade from 1DsII’s to III’s for example, battery life has gone from 400 frames to 3000 – 4000 frames.
And the batteries are lighter.
The menu is MUCH better and the camera writes bigger files to the cards at twice the speed.
In image quality there’s no contest – the new camera romps the older one in every respect.
Mind you, that’s not too say the older model is bad, it’s just not as good as the new – time moves on in digital.The noise issues with the 50D vs the 40D is a lot to do with pixel density – in reality the 50D is very good for it’s resolution, but maybe not a huge leap over the 40, like all this stuff, I wouldn’t get too bogged down in what the pixel nerds say and have a look for yourself.
