Nice pictures John – all look well shot.
A couple comments –
I normally don’t include any sky in a picture when it’s grey, unless trying to make a point about the sort of day it was.
If it grey and there’s no sky in the picture you have a lot of processing options to lift color and saturation and make everything look warm & sun-lit.
The other thing is your blacks look too punchy to me – not a lot, just enough where they might block up on a crap screen or in print.
Last thing, while I am getting a feel for the river in these shots (and others you’ve posted) I wouldn’t mind seeing some wider stuff where you get a sense of scale.

And a little bit of fishing gear.. 😉And if I have the big pack and really feel like taking pictures I add a bigger tripod and a Polaroid 600se + all the river side processing gear.

I find the Rio Selective Trout II fairly true to line weight – and because of this they work well on all my trout rods, not just the fast or slow ones..
It’s also an excellent line IMHO.. 😉

I don’t have a picture of my truck here at work, but I drive a 2002 F250 4×4 Crew Cab with a 7.3 litre Powerstroke. It is black with a grey interior Lariat package. I swore after driving a black truck for five years while living in Arizona that I’d never own another one. But, this deal was too sweet to pass up. I think that I could pull the White House from coast to coast with it.
What kind of milage do you get out of the big diesel ??

Steve, we have a choice of 5 dual cab small trucks here from Toyota, Mazda/Ford, Mitsubishi, Isuzu/GM and Nissan, it’s a very competitive market segment.
I want one, but the wife is not a fan because of the cramped back seats. 🙁
They all get good milage out of their small diesels and are not short of power, though they wouldn’t compare to one of the big American trucks in a drag race. 😉
The Hilux for example, probably does 0-60 in around 14-15 seconds, but it’s roll on times would be right up there with a meaty V6.
It probably does around 30 MPG on the open road.I like the Mitsubishi Triton the most, it has the biggest cab, but misses out on a bit of bed space – though with a canopy it would still be more then enough for my work.
It also has the option of full time 4 wheel drive on road unlike the others and can be optioned with a diff lock in the rear for around $600.
That would make it very good off road.I’ll have to keep the pressure up on the wife.. 😀

You could start with setting the zoom in roughly the middle of the range, and shoot straight down onto the rod on a simple background.
I’m not sure of the zoom range on your camera, but was thinking in the 50-70mm range eqv. on a full frame 35mm.For light you want flat & even – diffused daylight would be the easiest.
I try to keep backgrounds simple with stuff like rods as not to distract.

If Nikon is your thing (and that’s cool ;)) I would recommend waiting a bit and getting whatever they’re going to call the consumer version of the D3x.
It should cost around 2-3 G’s and will be full frame and 24 MP.This camera will be very taxing of crappy lenses and only the best will give you the sort of results that you might expect for the money.
Recently I tried the 14-24 and 24 – 70 2.8 G lenses, and they’re both brilliant and as good as anything on the market, if not better.
Add the 105 VR macro to either and you have a good fishing lens kit that’s light and does the job.
OK, all that is very expensive, but let me make a case for that –
First of all, photography at a pro level is VERY competitive and having the best gear is a bankable advantage as is having higher rez then the guy standing next to you.
Second, selling photos as stock well after any initial sale is very important for cash flow and longevity in the business, and while 12MP’s might be ok at the moment, in the near future your shots might be competing with 50 or 60 + and any extra rez will make them more market friendly down the track.

I now rent my camera bodies because the payment is 100% write-off every month and it also allows me to have the latest & greatest.
After the two year rental, I normally pay two additional months rent to buy out the cameras.
Both times I’ve done this my old bodies sold for much more then the pay-out when I’ve upgraded.*not sure if this is good advice for tax in the US.

I couldn’t get too mad at him for chucking the camera, but just the same, it will be a while before he gets to borrow one of my work cameras.. 😮

The thing about Ansel (my favorite photographer) is that his zone system and the way he took pictures is more for geeks than artists.
His photos are, for the time, perfect in almost every way.The same level of skill and knowledge if applied to digital would get the same sort of quality, but would, like Ansels stuff, require great commitment and a high level of geekery..
I’ve never had the patience for it myself, but I have always admired the people who shoot with that sort of commitment and attention to detail.

I agree with Zach, it’s a real pain to wrk on something like a line in photoshop and way more work then you might think.
I never do anything to mine in post.Some lines, like the dark olive ones are always hard to get a good frame of, but the brighter ones work ok if you have the right background.
