MemberIve never seen a fiberglass jet boat.. That doesnt mean that there isnt one or many.. Imagine driving on an icey road at 10 mph, you loose controle, slide into a tree and you impact at the drivers door..
You get out and look and there is a dent the size of a silver dollar 1/4 inche deep.. That is what needs to happen with a jet boat.. Just a tiny dent from any direction side, front back or bottom… When you learn a river you will be quite accostomed to each and every rock, and remember each one well.. You can patch a fiberglass boat, but if you punch a hole in it she will take on water pretty fast.. A fiberglass driftboat is much lighter and the force wont be any where near as much when you impact a jagged rock or ice.. The jet motor on a jet boatdave schlick
MemberVery nice reel and highly respected company.. I would like to add two cents of my feelings, which may not have any bearing on your choice… There are two ways to make a reel larger to hold the huge spey lines, belive me they take up lots of room.. You can make the reel larger diameter, or wider, or a combinaton of both.. If you go wide you have a smaller diameter arbor especially with the head out.. Also you have to be more carefull that the line is layed out equally onto the arbor as it comes in, or it will bind on the frame.. This reel is quite wide and heavier than most..

MemberSage said i can have my rod fixed locally..

MemberIm inching forward.. Ive talked to a local rod builder recomended by my favorite fly shop, he said he can fix them and noone would know the difference,, for 20 bucks.. tempting, but ill call sage and see what they say.. My options are starting to unfold, expensive returns are not my prefered method, definitely will not misrepresent myself, so im in kind of a tough spot.. I can afford the return, i like the helios, (which has a 30 dollar return), and I could fix the sage

MemberThe missouri below holter dam and down below craig montana is fishing very well, People come from all over the united states to fish that area with guides.. You can rent a drift boat at crosscurrents in craig.. Its a tailwater and bugs are tiny.. Most places below a dam could be fine. Call crosscurrents or montana flygoods in helena for information.. Canyon ferry was really hot recently, dont know if it still is or not.. Memorial day weekend is approximatly the peak for greyling in park lake..

MemberThere are three materials that i know of,, aluminum, wood, fiberglass.. Aluminum is noisy, wood needs maintaince and usually thin, fiberglass is heavy,,, and of course they all have ther good points..
There are three basic bottoms, flat, (rough ride in choppy water) 7 degree v , ( best all around for some circumstances) and deep v ( lakes rough water etc)..
This is a quick review and of course not very complete.. Dont go new, until you get the feel for a boat that fits your style.. One boat wont do everything of course, and youl be able to wade for where your boat wont go(sometimes) .. You should be able to get a jon boat for 400.00 and a 5-10 hp motor for reasonable price, used.. Be prepaired to put some money into it.. Id be thinking of size of motor first.. 5, 10, 15.. While you look for someones jon boat they have grown out of.. I have a 6 hp johnson twin that needs work that will go cheap for examle.. 10 hp will take me up the missouri in a very heavy boat, but no hurry.. Id go with a 14 foot used aluminum john boat and get a trailer somehow.. Then find a motor that fits, you should do fine with that until youv found the boat that really fits your need..
the faster you go( bigger motor) the more your butt will be dragging while drifting and motoring upstream.. You wont have enough powere to level her out until 25-50 hp, dont know.. so your butt will be draggin upstream.. ..
You seem like a drift boat kind of guy to me?
I have three motors on my boat, one in front and two in back, and i get some mighty strange looks when on a trout river.. And all three get clogged in bad circumstances often, and i get out the ores several times a year..
6 inch draft is tough to do with motor sometimes.. no way with you sitting in back on smaller boat and any motor at all ..

MemberHave the shuttle park your car where you can see it from the river, wolf creek to craig is easy as you will see the town and the craig ramp is just before the bridge..
I guess you can read the weather on the internet and there are webcams showing this area.. Im not really deep into this part of the river, but your going downstream and the fish are going up stream.. Id go up and bank fish on the east side just below the dam and see how that goes.. you could do very well there using pink down under..

MemberI have the 6wt two piece z axis.. great streamer rod.. It casts the 300 grain rio depth charge all summer long without problems,,.. The local sage dealer says ” Your going to break that rod!”
I did break two inches off the tip,(not while fishing) and was devistated.. Sage got it back for about 55 bucks total cost, in 3-4 weeks, i cant remember the exact cost…., but it weighed the same and had the same deflection, which was very important to me… Im happy with the rod and sage’s performance… dave

MemberI could see the humor in Tims comment, he ment no harm.. .. ,
Whats rare is that the shop did not do an accurate assessent of what its worth.. In the computer age, a valuation is several clicks away..
Dont leave your 1000 dollar flyrod in the boat when you go in to have a beer.. A thief will gladly sell it for $75.oo…. Addicts are a big problem in Helena and butte off and on.. .. Last summer there was a theft ring going into homes, with lookouts using cell phone in the street.. You come home, thier out the back door before you have the slightest idea..
