heres the bad news,, this of course could be offset by huge amounts of snow later…….., or big rains like what happend last year, saved early summer fishing but made late summer very poor.. …roy kaiser nrcs water specialist says,,, snow pack is below last year at this time,,,, other specialsts: fort peck is 12 feet lower than the 1991 drought, ,,,mountain snowpack is 80 percent statewide, 85 percent of average west of the continental divide,,,, 74 percent average east of the divide,,,,january was a very dry month,,, shields and musselshell basins reported low snowpacks, ruby madison, galliton and lower yellowstine show near record lows (snowpack),,,, keiser said he isnt worried yet becouse snowpack can build up thru march, it doesnt take that many storms to pull us out, but we have to start to get some activity.. … {{{my personal opinion is that we live in a semiarid state… ,, any reduction in streamflow puts trout in stress.. oxygen levels drop, plant life goes crazy, we loose big fish to fishing pressure etc, etc, etc,… last year the guides took a big hit on the satisfaction of thier clients , and profits in the helena area,… talking to fly shops in bozeman, butte i didnt hear rosy reviews either.. the tailwaters and nymphing in hot spots made exceptional fishing for me, but those only wanting dry fly fishing were generally unhappy, about numbers and size.. the tailwaters have protected flows, but the heat drove the fish down during the day in my opinion, but were still sctatching our heads as to “wha happned?”}} .september was cold and the guides took another hit, but probably good for the fish..
in the old days i used the scientific angler click and paul number 10.. if you leaned on the brake too much the fish was gone.. and the tin martin.. i was really sold on the martin for many years for creeks.. now im into ross,… i have a canyon 5 and feel it is as good as the replacements they are comming out with, and much better looking. that i havnt really fully checked out yet.. the evolution is my prefered reel and i dont even know what type of drag it is..i alos have some sage large arbor but they dont hold enought backing for me… black is prefered becouse i can touch up nicks with a perminant marker.. the main reason i liked the evolution is becouse of the definite very fine and accurate clicks to the drag adjustment.. when fishing i like a fairly loose drag to work the reel pull line off etc.. when i get a big fish taking off in the current i turn the drag up 3-5 clicks depending on where im at..then back down if they get too far out… when i get close to shore with a big trout where they can turn and run in an instant i turn the drag back down. it can be argued that the pole being in the up possition will give you the same effect, but not on the missouri.. we have what we call the rollers.. alot of these fish when they get close to shore will roll.. i lost many many fish with rod up and a net under the fish.. if your pulling at all up on the rod they will come loose as the hook when they roll is pulling itself out in that possition as they roll.. i catch alot more fish by backing up the bank keeping my rod down pointied strait at the fish and with a loose drag incase they turn.. if they role the hook is still being lightly pulled strait out of their mouth and they will usually be landed in a protected shallows where i can trap them with the net…. in a boat it doesn matter that much as we can drift with them if they go downstream and we have a very long large net to land them.. . they dont seem to roll when in deeper water now that i think of it….. 🙂
you can determine the best flycaster by both throwing their rod at an accuracy point or open can.. then you switch rods and cast again and add the scores up..
i own them, and only can go out with the 5wt b2x and 6wt z axis and 8 foot silver label 4wt, shoot to my porch with the porch lite on at night in below zero temps, becous its dark when i get off work. . this helps explain the madness to my methods and writings.. cabin fever :P.. im actually looking for comments like all the ones im getting to figure out what has gone wrong for me with the 5 wt b2x.. competent anglers around helena keep saying the 5 wt in your choise of mfgs is THE rod for the missouri.. i just got a message on another list that said accuracy is a factor of lenght.. im beginning to wish i got the 8 1/2 foot 5wt b2x..(that would be for me) but i should have tried the x axis 5wt also becouse the stronger tip would give ME more accuracy..,maybe not thenext guy… the fish here on the mo wont move for a trico, it has to be perfectly in his path,, accuracy is everything.. im also realizing that with the low water and hot weather were having in late summer makes a soft presentation a must.. so i think your on the right track with the 4wt b2x.. what lenght is it.? the 4 wt 8 foot silver lable cant be pushed beyond 35 feet, i cant see a trico or midge etc, any further anyway,, if that far,, the 4 wt usually will only come down soft with most casts, and it is as accurate as the 5 b2x in a 9 foot rod for me, if not more accurate…. i bought the 590 wt b2x becouse i figured all these people who own them and are totaly elated with it cant be wrong.. if you completely read andersons shootout on the yellowstone angler, anderson explains that the tip on the b2x is weak and this couses accuracy problems at abut 30 feet i think he said,
the weight skip,must carry out with the rod you start with.. somehow i got off track with you guys and use 3 5 7 8 9 wt rods..?? am i a sinner? but when fishing all day after working in an office all winter, its great to not have any more rod than you need.. im 58 years young and each weight gives me a big difference in hand fatigue, carpel tunnel troubles, etc.. when out fishing hard the first thing that happens is my hand and forearm falls asleep, you know the tingles etc…. then after about a half hour if it comes back to life.. go figure.. but around here a 4 weight is a creek( or small river) rod.. and the wind always blows on the missouri, well almost.. so i need a comfortable rod and also a wind rod.. to me thats starting to look like the 5b2x which i have with light line, and a 6wt with a punch, with into the wind like line.. i just got my son a tfo professional 6 wt four piece for christamas becouse he lost alot of fish last year out of our boat. we were fishing deep with 9-12 foot leaders below the float for 3-4 1/2 lb stockers in hot weather, landing quite a few in a day… he was using my dads creek 5 wt from cabellas last summer,and it just didnt hack it.. becouse it was soft, not becouse it was a 5wt… he with that very soft rod was loosing lots of fish becouse he just couldtnt set the hook fast enough using very long leaders under deep water… my 5 wt sage ds2 did very well from the boat in that situation.. anyway i put rio nymph line
hi, just registered,,i like the different views here,, i have a question.. i just bought the 5wt b2x, it seems to be a great rod. ive decided i cant tell until ive used it for a season. feels alot like my 5 wt ds2, with better feel for backcast load, and a great little oomph in the lower section of the rod.. cant cast it further than my ds2 tho,,yet…. hopefully ill like it with the
