Thanks for your reply Joel.   Nary a fly or waiders  in the car!    I hit the missouri hard the day before and landed one 19 incher right at dark..   So yesterday  I was taking the day off..  The ice is receding on Houser lake and I am considering going out   and giving roll casting with the new rod a try.    Lake fishing gives great photo ops, and unbeliveable catch numbers around here on somedays,   but the lake  fish just dont have the zoom river fish do..  🙂   The river is 34 degrees so  not much zoom going on anywhere…
As per the 7 wt z axis  9 1/2 foot,  it takes a 9 wt line to tame her..   The day i got it (special order) the salesman said, Nice steelhead rod!   This thing is a 8/9.. It will totaly wear me out in no time at all..   Good searching rod for wading with streamers tho..  I mean searcing a 200  foot wide river for miles,   ;D ..

Some advice that may not be well recieved or accepted..   Living in a mountain environment for almost 40 years,,,   In the times of 4x4s, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, gps, cell phones and etc..   Never go beyond what your brain, legs and a good compass, a knife,   food, water,   clothes you can carry can get you out..   😕  … It can get real scary pretty fast, expecially with your   children along..

I agree with Mike in that i need to adjust a drag for small hooks nymphing and big fish..  I sometimes use number 20 gnats in a weather   cooldown in the spring for 4 lb+ fish..  I depend on the drag to tell me what the correct pressure the terminal system will be able to tolerate and still get the fish..  If he runs for it, and breaks off, I had the best settings possible, thats my luck, the system couldnt do anything about it…  Next I like to tinker with the darn thing..  The reel that i use and like best is the evolution.. I can adjust it at the minimum drag I want..  This i can also do with the canyon..   I bought a lamson , didnt like the minimum drag setting and called them..  He was at breakfast with his family it sounded, but said that i could not change anything with that reel. Also  the knob to turn the drag has no clics or tension adjustment to the nob itself,   and could spin in tackle bag or hitting the coat.. Poor design in my opinion.  Im quite worried the drag will come off, and the reel will back lash on a fish of a lifetime..   With the evolution what worked yesteday will work today, I may change some clicks  one way or the other, but I know it will be right there where I last put it..  Dave

“fished very well with streamers. Especially well when I was fishing behind bobber fishermen, for some reason.”

After My youngest son had seen my brown photo, he wanted to go fishing .  ..  We went out and the weather was cool, but nice…   We had alot of fun, the pressure was completely off me and I let him fish the down stream end of the boat..  Essentially giving him the most access to the bites..  When the sun went down, and the evening progressed the fish became more aggressive which is usually the case…
Before we left I asked him if he wanted to take a chance on a big brown, and maybe catch none, or do you want to catch some fish..   He said lets catch some fish!..
      So off we went…
He was letting his line out and wiggleing it behind the boat, and it took some convinceing to get him to cast..    I had to inform him   that swishing sound of the fly  was not a good cast, but that the line was not all the way back, and he should wait for  his forward movement some..   With that and a few minutes he was casting as well as me…   Slapping the water behind which i know is a teckhical error, but that coupeled with a double haul and shooting the line,  will give maximum distance with the fewest casts using  300 grain sink tip line and weighted flys..
He really wanted me to use his pole and fish the back of the boat, (downsteam), being certain that it was his stiff number 6 tfo professional  that really made the difference..
But my problem was I was in front of the boat, and as the line would swing to the back, the fish could see the boat, or feel  turbulance of it and it just isnt as good as in the front..   Hits from the side, would have slack line, and I just didnt have much experience with this type of fising… I didnt care, this was family day, and His fun was my fun…    dave
