We’re getting near the end of the trip but there are a few more days ahead on the rivers. We checked out of West today after a breakfast of Blueberry pancakes at the Old Town Café.
There’s not a cloud in the sky and temps are rising from 28 degrees fast. We are heading back to Twin Bridges today. After an uneventful drive to Twin Bridges and a stop for some supplies in Ennis, we checked again at the Stonefly Inn. At noon it is nearing 60 degrees. After a hot bowl of soup at the Shack, I ventured out to the Big Hole above Pennington Bridge. Rooster Leavens of 4 Rivers Fishing in Twin Bridges told me about a guy that was easily persuaded with a 6 pack to allow access to the river across his land. He’ll remain nameless, but indeed access was granted. After about a mile walk upstream, I began slinging a #4 Olive Leech pattern on the 7 wgt through the runs. In 2.5 hours of fishing, I landed at least 20 fish, all pushing 14+”. Several of the browns were real bruisers as the Big Hole is in the middle of its spawn. Two of the fish were worthy of some photos.
The rainbow made two blistering runs up and down this section of river before being subdued.
Tonight’s dinner is a homemade job at the Stonefly Inn which has a really cool commons area called The Roost. We grilled a New York steak, some corn on the cob and cracked open bottle of Shiraz.
Life is good.Tomorrow we float!

Another great post Mike! But damn those pancakes are making me hungry! I admire your dedication in keeping us up to date on the trip. It has been a morning ritual for the past two weeks to see what you’ve been up too. Can’t imagine the state of depression you will go through when you have to go back to reality!

Solid report Mike. You’ve set the bar high with regard to trip reports.
I see a trend here at IA. Every trip report has the obligatory shot of a plate of food that is indigenous to the region. Kinda like boobies and pie on that “other” website.
One of the MANY great things about this board….Zach does not allow the “crap” that was so prevelant on “that other board”.
I am glad to be rid of that junk.
I ditto the suggestion that all future Trip Reports must feature a shot of local food and cuisine.

Don’t make it mandatory……some folks cook over a fire or just drink their diner when they go on fishing trips.
Just sayin’………….
